Default FM Expander ....worth buying?

I just recently bought an /////ALPINE CDA-7847J (Japan) head unit off of eBay for dirt cheap (under $40 shipped). I was aware that the FM frequency is different and that I needed a "FM expander" in order to listen to the radio. I just found out that most of the expander distributors/sellers are from UK, Japan or New Zealand. Plus, the damn thing cost roughly around $40 not including s/h!!! Has anyone used these "expanders" and are they really worth it? Seems kinda pointless because it is just about the same price as what I paid for the h/u itself.

I'm trying to way my options. I would rather get another cd player instead of waiting for that FM expander. Plus, I have my doubts since I have never bought anything overseas.

Surely they don't cost that much? they are really common here in NZ since 90% of our cars are jap imports. They only cost about $5, of course you have to put up with having the station on the display being different from the station you are actually listening to.

They may be $5 for you, but converted to US dollars it is about ....$13+ and $__ for s/h. I have seen some on ebay going for that price and more, but still not sure if I want to wait that long for the delivery.

Nah I meant $5 US. They are about $10nz, our dollar sucks. Our ones won't work with your frequency anyway.
My point was, if people here can make them that cheap then someone where you are is ripping you off.

I just bought a JDM stereo, I'm wondering about this too.

So since the band only goes up to 90.0 but in the US it usually goes up to 107 something, would that mean that the highest point on the US band would just read as the highest point on the display or what?

From my understanding...if you have a 20mHz FM expander module....the h/u display for example is "80.6" ----> 100.6 (US station)
