Default A Part from under the Car....?????

As i was driving something got lose, under my car, and started scrapping the floor. When i removed it, it seemed to be the shell of the "catalytic converter." Is that bad? Should i replace the whole catalytic converter? Am I able to do it myself? Or should i not worry about it?

Was this a bad thing to truly happen?

Thanks,
SojournMystical

So long as you regularly don't park on grass, you'll be fine without it. I've witnessed cats without shields start grass fires, though only after long trips (so the cats were very hot).

Don't worry about it, everyone tears the shields off eventually. If you opt to remove the top shield at the same time, just remember there is an o2 sensor going through a hole in the top shield (if it's a 96 or newer). I spent ten minutes trying to bend it just the right way to try and get the shield out of there before I remembered the o2 was there. I felt like an idiot. Had to cut the small part around the hole in the heat shield and it came out no problem after that.
