Why do these speakers sound so bad?
The speakers in my 94 EG hatch sound like crap. The best way I can describe the sounds of bass they try to make is like a farting sound. They are aftermarket speakers, I think all 4 are Pioneer speakers (w/blue cones), hooked up to my Pioneer deck (45W max per channel). They are horrible, I have to keep the bass all the way down so it doesn't sound like that. I never had this problem in my 97 Civic sedan with the same deck hooked up. Could it be because the speakers have no enclosure around the back?
Make sure the polarity is correct. Easy way to tell is to "pop" them with a 9v battery. Do this at the output on the radio. + to + and - to -. Watch the speaker move, make sure they both move the same way, when they are hooked up the same way... if you get me.
Could also be your shitty factory radio. Or it could be the install of the speakers. Pics would assist.

I'll give the 9v thing a try since I didn't wire the speakers... the previous owner did. My deck isn't factory... it's a Pioneer DEH-7400 I think... I got it brand new this year.

Sounds like your speakers are out of phase. Just reverse the connection on one speaker and see if that helps. Do this for the front and back. HTH

I think that may be it... do the factory mounting spots in the back of the EG hatch have a bowl around them too seal the air or something? If they don't, that's probably why. I haven't actually looked yet.

Well, my results. I reversed tha speaker polarity, and it did absolutly nothing different... it still sounded like crap. I did figure out that the 6" speakers in the back have absolutly no enclosure behind them, would that affect the sound quality?
I also found out that the speakers that are in there are junk, they are Kenwoods but they have very small magnets. I think I'm going to go for a 4 speaker amplified upgrade.
What should I do about the lack of enclosures?

Your back speakers behind the seats dont need closures. This kind of happened in my hatchback. I found out that the previous owner connected the front 2 speakers together so they sounded like crap. Make sure your wires thats connected from the deck to the correct speakers are not used more than once.

I wired everything into the deck myself, so I know it's all good there. Any reason why the back speakers wouldn't need enclosures?
