Default primer question

my car has many small dings and a few rust spots. also there are many spots where the clear coat is coming off and it looks horrible. i dont want the rust to ruin my car and i can not afford to have it repainted so i am considdering the option of sanding down the clear coat and any rust and spraying it with black primer. my question is what are any negative things about just painting it with primer other that the way it looks? will the primer protect the metal?

Not to be a ***** but i didnt ask if i should save my money and "do it right the first time". I tried to be detailed in my question so I wouldnt get this kind of answer. It would take me years to save up enough money for a complete paint job. I just want to know if its going to hurt my car to just have primer on it. Ive already made up my mind that i would like the black primer look better than 11 year old shitty looking paint with rust, dings, and dull spots. The other benefit that I know of is that it would hsave me a hell of a lot of money if i do the prep work myself. So once again can anything negative come from just having primer on my car?
