Default bleeding gone wrong

well installed a new radiator fan today, wired it up and hooked it up.

started bled the cooling system, heres the problem

so i took the radiator cap off, put a funnel in there, filled it up with distilled water, then some antifreeze, and then more water until it got a little full. turned on the car...

the car heat slowly started to rise and when it hit normal operating temp. the thermostat never turned on so the fan never turned on. it started to steam a little bit but hopefully it was just the coolant i spilled burning off. i left the car on for another 5 mins and nothing just coolant filling the funnel up more and more, so i just turned off the car

any advice?

TIA, helping out a freind

The thermostat is suppose to fully open ~180*F. It also has a hole or two drilled it in from the factory to keep 'some' coolant circulating. The fan switch isn't suppose to turn the radiator fan on until ~200-210*F. So the case could very well be that if you idle a cold engine for awhile, that since no heat is really being generated, the thermostat can take care of keeping things cool and the radiator fan never turns on.

This was the case for me too and since I saw the temp gauge indicate a fully warmed up engine added with the engine had been idling for about 10-15 mintues by now, it was bled enough IMO. And yes, there was a little bit of steam starting to form near at the radiator neck.

Make sure to have the heater controls set to full hot but not turned on.

so do i have to keep revving the car or something for it to reach the temps it needs for the car to turn on? i heard it was best to have the heater on full blast? so just turn the setting to hot but not turn on the heater at all?

Turn the heater to full hot but don't turn the fan on at all. That's acting like a mini-radiator and cooling down the same coolant that you are trying to get hot. But you have to get the air bubbles out of the system and so you have to set the heater control to full hot to at least allow coolant to circulate though the heater core.

No, you do not have to free rev the engine to get it hot. I just let mine idle and that did the job nicely. And you also do not have to wait for the radiator fan to kick on once. While bleeding my coolant, the radiator fan has never turned on. Just idling for 10-15 minutes and topping off the radiator as needed got the job done.
