Larger car wheels... what should I know??
Hey guys, I have a '00 Honda Accord EX sedan 5spd.... it has 15" x 6" wheels as standard. I was thinking of "upgrading" to 17" x 7" wheels. The problem is I am not sure what I need to do to allow for this kind of swap.

I am looking at these wheels for now (and as an example) and it says it has an offset of 35mm. What does that mean? I didn't lower the car and I don't plan to. I may not even by any wheels (depending on what I have to do to fit 17" wheels on the car). Can somebody give me a little help here? The goal is just to make my car look a little sportier. I want to add a Honda spoiler (small one with brake light), maybe some 17" wheels, and possibly also some tint. I already have a xenon kit ($300+) I bought for the car that works / looks awesome. My stereo will finally be in and installed [and finished] Sunday. Once I get past the subtle looks and "sporty" additions I think I will also want to tighten up the handling some too.

If I go with 17" wheels do I have to use low profile tires?? They look nice, but I deliver pizza so I need form to follow function... I have to be prepared for any kind of road surface. I think I'll get snow tires for the 15" wheels and put those on in the winter time, assuming I don't have to mod my car to fit 17" wheels... Thanks for the help guys.

17"s fit no problem and I beleive +35 is the correct offset. offset is where the wheel accually mounts the the rim in comparison to the center of the wheel .. a 0 offset will mount in the middle .. + offsets will be mounted more towards the inside .. as for the tires .. your supposed to keep the over-all whell & tire combo diameter of the stock wheels .. so if you gain 2" in rim .. your gonna loose 2" in tire side wall. I personally like to plus size the tires an extra size and get some extra rubber and fill the wheel wells better ..
get 18's...look so much better. i sed 25 series tires and it didnt change my speedo.
though, a suggestion, regardless of the wheels you get..go w/lightweight. bigger wheels will put a hurtin on your gas mileage.. it did mine.
and i wish i would have know that or else I wuld have went w/lightweight..worth the money in the long run i say.

I DO recommend 17" wheels. 18's are rough riding because there's not much tire, and 19's are possible, but ride quality and cost make it not worth it unless its a show car. For 17" wheels, 225/45/17 is the exact same tire height as stock wheels and tires. (25.1 inches) If you feel like doing the math...
195mm width divided by 25.4 = 7.67" wide
7.67" width times (.)65 = 5.0 inch sidewall height
5.0 times 2 = 10 inches
plus your 15" rim = 25" overall height
for a new tire, just plug in the numbers in place of the bold ones.

Awesome thanks so much for your help guys. The wheels I was looking at are 17" x 7" but I've also seen 17" x 7.5" - and the offset is always a different number. How do I know if a wheel is considered as "lightweight" or not? Do they list the weights or just what the wheel is made of? If I buy a 17" x 7" wheel then I should be able to fit a 225/45/17 tire on it? Thanks again for all your help.
its how its made and what its made of depicts if its lightweight..and lightweight wheels cost more and its always specified if they are lightweight or not.
and as far as riding rough..
I my 96 accord has h&r lowering springs (around 2") and i have 225/25/18 tires and the ride is fine. granted, there is a slight difference in how they feel vs stock..but not to spine jarring diff. you can definetly feel the road better..and road noise w/the wider tires is much more evident..but for a stock suspension, man i think youd be very suprised still how comfy your car would be w/18's. i was expecting it to be horrid..but its fine

I looked around on that site you posted but it seems everybody has either 18" or 19" wheels. On top of that, most of the Accords are coupes and they are all "decked-out". I want my Accord to stay as stock looking as possible... I was looking for Honda 17" wheels but they all seem to be 5-lugs (mine are 4-lugs each) and not quite the style I am looking for.

The correct tire size for retaining the same overall diameter is 215/45/17. 225/45/17 will be a slightly wider, slightly taller tire. The difference isn't much, so it won't be a big deal either way.
I went from 195/65/15 to 215/45/17 and honestly haven't noticed much difference in ride quality. (And the roads in my area suck big, fat, hairy *****.)

I used some online wheel calculator the other day, it showed that going from 195/65/15 tires to 225/45/17 tires would yield the least difference in overall size. The 15" wheels turn 807 rev/mi while the 17" wheels turn 808 rev/mi (using the tire sizes specified above). That is a very small difference and should keep my speedometer just about as accurate with the 17" wheels as it was with the 15" wheels.

think offset is 44 for 6th gen.. i have 215/45/17 and i cringe everytime i hit a pothole here in sunny Quebec.. but the wider ur tire is, the more it'll follow the groves laid by heavy traffic. personaly, i think 225's arent as flush as 215's as they come out more out of each wheelwell. but it's up 2 u dude.. i like the adr 8's u got in mind... i have 9 spoke Kazera's myself got it at tirerack.com 4 cheap on yoko's avs es 100's

I used TireRack's info for each brand/model of tire, which includes rotations per mile. Using the information listed there, 215/45/17 came the closest to the same size as the factory michelins. Either way... even if the rotations/mile changed from 807 to 820, the difference is negligible.

Do you guys prefer 17" or 18" wheels? and why? I would think 18" is more for show... but it seems a lot of people have been suggesting 18" wheels. I just don't want to regret my choice... not much difference from 15" to 17" wheels.
