Default Almost ready to dyno - check my mod plan for holes

With much help from many members from many boards and endless research and many parts at amazing prices I'm just about done acquiring and ready to install and dyno. Before that stage however, I thought it would be wise to throw my plans out into the ethernet for feedback. All comments welcome, thanks.

91 Acura Integra LS, 144k, CAI and suspension installed.

Everything acquired in the past 2 months.

Awaiting install:

Crower 404's (Stage 3) - Acquired
Crane Springs and Retainers - Acquired
JG 62mm bored Throttle Body - Acquired
Skunk 2 Intake Manifold - Actively searching
Apexi VAFC - Acquired
FPR - Actively searching
Fuel Gauge - Acquired
DC Sports 4-2-1 Header - Acquired
AEM Adjustable Cam Gears - Acquired
Dyno - HOOKUPS IMPORT TEK (Upland, CA) - Appointment Pending

Your gonna be over cammed dont expect much more then 160hp with out more compression, IE pistons or milling the head. I would go wiht a more mild cam if i wasint gonna up the compressionnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

They're not running the same setup though ... you shouldn't assume those numbers.

Don't get me wrong, you've got the makings of a good setup just don't expect MASSIVE gains ... then again, it all depends on what your goal was to begin with *shrug*

As stated already, I'd look into increasing compression.

Can you use a VAFC on a non-VTEC motor? I didn't think so.

VAFC works on non-vtec, you just set the vtec engagement above the redline, it has more options than SAFC as well.

Backup information for the following statements would be very helpful to me, and or, others with experience validating this information:

403's, 62mm TB, bore matched stock IM, 2-3/8" high flow cat and matching exhaust will provide more useful power band with stock redline.

404's, 62mm TB, Skunk2 IM, 2-3/8" high flow cat and matching exhaust will provide more useful power band with increased redline.

Thanks!

The following was from a very experienced member of another board -

"The 404's are a great LS cam. They'll have a lope at idle, but they'll pull hard and make power. You can get plenty of power out of that setup without raising the compression. Whoever said you have to raise compression to get results is an idiot."

Default switch from 404's to 403's?

From another board, please analyze and comment:

The 403s start making big gains at 5500rpm rather than 6k, which gives you more than 50% extra high-end playtime under that 6900rpm redline.

Crower's plot:

While Crower's 404 plot shows marginally more midrange torque than their 403 plot, you can't really compare the plots directly with such small differences. In my experience, the 404s sacrifice a little midrange for extra top end vs. the 403s, which makes sense if you understand cam profiles. My dyno plot with 403s:

As you can see with Crower's 403 plot, 403s already are capable of making some decent power a little past the stock redline. With 404s all you'd be doing is sacrificing midrange (not to mention idle quality, low-end smoothness and emissions) to put extra power past 7k where you can't reach it.

I think the common mistake people are making is that just because upping the compression would go well with the cams, it is not needed in order to have a great setup.

Thanks, I agree, and that what my previous research told me, its good for all angles to be questioned and answered.

If there's more, I wanna hear it, sound off on anything.

I never said you HAD to raise the compression, you asked for people's input remember? PMO, have fun with whatever you do .....

set up looks good...seems like you've really done your research and thats the most important part.

what do you think you'll be putting to the wheels though? my friend has just a jdm gsr engine and hes got just I/E and IM and he put down 174 whp. My question is do you think the money you've spent was fair for what power you'll be putting down?

The quoted reply about compression was because someone on another board said I would see NO GAINS without increasing compression, so that wasn't in response to your statement and yes raising compression would help and no I'm not expecting massive gains

and I appreciate your feedback, thanks

stuff isn't in yet so I've never been to the track......

I think 150-160whp would be great.

As far as money, you don't want to know what I spent.......................very little, and mostly paid for by selling stuff on Ebay, all prices including shipping.

Crower 404's (Stage 3) - $250 used for 2k miles
Crane Springs and Retainers - $150 NIB
JG 62mm bored Throttle Body - $50 used
Skunk 2 Intake Manifold - $125 (pending) used
Apexi VAFC - $130 used
FPR - $10 (selling edelbrock for profit buying B&M)
Fuel Gauge - $18 NIB
DC Sports 4-2-1 Header - $45 used
AEM Adjustable Cam Gears - $74 NIB
Clutchmaster 7.5# flywheel - $132 used
Dyno - HOOKUPS IMPORT TEK (Upland, CA) - $100

I'm not getting that much horsepower but out of pocket costs for everything is only like $300-400, rest paid for by selling on Ebay. Turbo, nitrous, ls/vtec, all much more expensive and difficult. These are all mods I can do myself. So, I didn't spend that much, I'm getting a big kick in the butt over stock, and gain all the enjoyment and knowledge of doing it myself. I'm good.

Well, your expectations are very reasonable for what your doing, you don't see that everyday, props to you for that. Seen so many guys think they would get a monster by adding a few bolt ons and head components, why I sort of jumped the gun ... sorry about that.

@those prices, holy cow you did good there.
