Should I buy this junker?
There is this 1990 HONDA CRX SI for sale, and the guy wants $300. However, it has most of the interior missing, needs a drivers side door, hood, tailights. Tranny is shot and so is the motor. He says its still good for parts though. Its missing its gauges, pehaps dash, etc.
I want this as a project car, so it doesnt really matter what the condition is. But I am wondering, would it be alright to buy this $300 car (maybe get it down to $200), and over time build it back to original, with new motor and tranny, etc. Or just try and find one that runs for like $1000. How much am I looking at (without new motor/tranny) to get the body back to a "stock" looking car. Off of forum sales or junk jards.

damn hell yeah.....barbados yellow just like mine brings back sweet memories of when i first saw mine, but yeah maybe 250 without door good deal.....rare car and color
I would also ask why it has been sitting there so long. Ask if it was in any accidents because you can't drive the car you might buy it and get it in running order and something be messed up with the frame. Just putting it out there. That's what I would be thinking if I were to buy the car
HAHA, I live by that, lol
I payed $500 for one that runs. He wanted 500.00 but maybe someone smaked him. But there is a few in the junk yard if you really want to get it you can pull the parts. The junk yards not far from there, like 5 min

I live in Orlando and there is a lot of junkjards down the street I live on, it shouldnt be too hard to find parts to put this car back together right? What kinda prices am I looking at for dash/gauges/hood/door/most interior pieces? It probably is too much work for me now that I think about it. If someone got atleast one that runs for $500.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

crx has a bit more value than the hatch, thats just my opinion. I would get it in a second but if it has rust im cool.

too bad about the curse....
too bad about the curse....
i say do it if your going fix it up, but dont be like my cousin. he bought a h/b, saying he's going to fix it up but till this day it still looks like junk. he hasn't put no money into it and i dont think he ever will.
I am kind of worried about that ^. Im afraid this will be just too much work for me to do. I am looking at working on this car throughout college (3 more years) so I have plenty of time. But I defenitely want to invest money and make it a good looking crx. I also wont insure/get a tag for it unless it runs good. My dad doesnt like the idea of "wasting" so much money on a 90's car, but my mom says do it.
How would the new door work? As far as the lock and keys go?
My mom is worried that since the motor/tranny are busted, the car wont be able to be able to run again. Either I wont be able to, or its impossible to get it running again? What would make the tranny/engine be busted? Abuse/not taking care of it?

If the frame is straight and there is no rust, then 200-300 is what I would want to pay for a shell of a car. Notice the "want", expect to pay more.
What could make a motor break, plenty. Lack of oil, overheating, bad timing, someone pouring nuts and bolts into an intake, many many many things and you won't really be able to tell until you take it apart or the previous gives some sort of clue.
The transmission could break from overall wear and tear or from abuse. Just another thing you won't be able to tell until you open it up.
Your question presents an interesting aspect about your mechanical ability. Zilch would be the word I would use, or something close to it. The crx is really easy to fix, but it takes time to get up to easy from nothing. A SI motor and transmission should cost you in the area of 500ish(maybe you can even find someone throwing away one from a swap), and from there all you need is an engine hoist and good amount of time and help. A door might be had for 150 or lower. Interior pieces are pretty easy to find in junkyards, except for the highly prized climate control.
All told the car will probably cost 700 to 1300 more to fix, what you might find a decent running Crx for. You'll learn a lot more about the car from fixing it though. Also if you do buy the car also be sure to buy a helms manual for it, it'll save you a lot of headaches.

Look bud, like i said i live right down the rd from that thing. If you get it you can bring it by my house, i have an si trany that i am not using (sell ya real cheep) and well get her running. I even have an si motor laying around, it's all took apart but it has good parts. Hell if you don't get it i might.
O **** man, i just saw it on auto trader, i saw one like that in z-hills, my bad. But Miami? i don't think i would drive that far for it. But offer still stand, if you need help and you do get it i'll help you out. 1 H-T member to another.

I would buy it.
At the junkyards by my house you can get an engine for $130, or sometimes $70 when they are on sale. If you are going to try to fix the existing engine, I'd just either rebuild it or wait for someone throwing out a swap engine (or just take CBURKE up on his offer).
The prices at my junkyard are:
door - $40 (sometimes on sale for $20)
hood - $30
Trunk - $40 (often on sale for $20)
I'm guessing you can get a dash cheap as well. If you are not too picky, get a HB dash to save yourself some time/hassle.
The first thing I'd do would be to put the door/hood/trunk on it. The last thing you want is for it to rain in the car.
As for the key fitting into the new door, it's pretty easy to remove the door handles, and then only one pin is holding in the key cylinder. You can take the cylinder out of the passenger side door and take it to a locksmith that does auto locks. Give him the new cylinder (from the new door) and tell him you want it to work with the key from the other cylinder. This should cost you like $40 or so. you could also just go to Honda with teh serial number off of the passenger cylinder and buy a new one for your driver's side.
How in the hell did he loose the hood, trunk, and drivers side door anyway?
Honestly if I saw that car I'd buy it. If anything it would be a very fun long term project. A lot of people would buy it b/c they would drop in a new engine anyway. Since you want to restore it to stock (good boy!) you can get all of the parts much cheaper.
Buy it. It may take you afew years to get it all done, but it will be well worth it. Just don't loose interest, and TAKE PICTURES while you restore her.
