Default polishing steel

is there anyway steel can be polished. in the past i polished out my 5zig fno's and loved them but the wheels were AL. i want to do this to my roll bar but i dont know if i can and at the same time prevent it from rusting. i dont want to clear coat it if at all possible. are there any other options, such as powder coating, plating, etc. i dont have the money for chrome plating(which is what i really want or something like it) so any help would be appreciated. thanks.

I tried to have a local Polishing shop work on a steel 3pt strut bar, but they said they couldn't do it. I don't know if there's a way to make it happen, but they said it wouldn't be possible. Perhaps there's a process that allows it to be done, and they just don't know how to go about it? I don't know. I ended up having the piece powder coated.

It's a light silver color, with a texture to it.
