how to tell if ef?
look at your VIN... it'll start with something like 'JHMED9'... characters 4-6 are the chassis code. EFs only exist in japan, yours is probably an ED like mine. you can search for a list of chassis codes to see what they all are.
^^ He's got it.
A lot or people like to refer to their cars as EF8/EF9's but realisticaly they're ED's. An EF8 is a CRX SiR which America didn't get and an EF9 is a HB SiR which we also didn't get.
People calling their cars EF's is alright but when someone refers to their USDM HB as an EF9 or their USDM CRX as an EF8 it kind of erks me

yeah, i tried to break the habit of referring to 4th gen's as EFs, but the tradition is too strongly entrenched. go up to some guy and say "hey, nice EH, ED, EJ, etc." and he'll just look at you funny... but everyone knows what "EG, EF, EK" mean.

What, you mean when people put those spoon shift ***** in their car, it doesnt make them "JDM"....
Is it just me people, or is this "JDM" thing getting played out cause of people aiming it in the wrong direction. Because some kid that bought Amber Sidemarkers, or a Interior Map light off of eBay thinks that his car is JDM'ed out...
Im sorry to ramble but this is really irretating, and I just wanted to say something before this post started to go into that direction like most others do

Im not sure how you interpreted my post, or maybe im reading yours wrong but i agree with what you are saying. Just like what Steronz said, calling your car an EF to me is alright but when some guy says look at my EF9 and its a USDM HB w/ wheels and other minor mods to me its kind of annoying. Not to the point that i want to punch a wall or anything it just erks me.
This is my opinion of course so some may agree, others may disagree thats just how i feel about the subject.

You misread the post. They're talking about EF8s and EF9s.
And for your information EF are 88-91, and EGs are 92-95.
I agree with you guys that it's akward to call a USDM CRX or hatch an EF, but it's a term that's burnt in within our car language. 99% of people with 92-95 civic hatchbacks refer to them as EGs. Is it a real EG? No, but it brings the point across. It bothered me at first, until I noticed nobody knew what a ED or EH was.
Oh and about JDM. I think alot of people forgot what true "rice" meant. Spending X amount of dollars on a body kit and 18" wheels, but your motor is stock. That was rice. So what's the difference between that and a car with "jdm" parts with a stock motor? This JDM phase is a form of rice. Period. Let's see 5 years from now when something else is popular, how many EGs we'll see with amber corners and sidemarkers.
...sorry just had to vent a little.

It sounds like you have that backwards. You steering wheel is on the left side, USDM(driver side). If it wasn't you'd have a RHD car and it would be JDM.

wow Now that I feel like a retard.
Does anybody have direct links to what is usdm 88-91, 92-95, 96-00? Since this is the only place I live these are the only ones I really car about.
I have always learned 88-91 = EF, 92-95 = EG, 96-00 = EK.
Now I am wrong and MUST LEARN what they really are.

EF8 = CRX SiR from Japan. RHD JDM CRX
EF9 = 88-91 Civic from Japan. RHD JDM Civic
Unless you have one imported from Japan you have neither. In North America it is the ED body code and in Europe the EE. At least I think so about the Europe one.

According to the research I have done, you are correct, all USDM vehicles of the "EF" persuasion are ED and Euro cars would be the EE. It is all about perception, hence the fact my little car is stock, and as close to the original "JDM" design specs as intended other than the fact that it has the steering wheel on the left side and USDM stock fenders with no holes in them.
The thing many fail to realize is that Rice is what you make of it, as well as JDM. As long as you are happy with what you have, no big deal. The ED and EE cars are based on the original EF generation design, so if people want to refer to their USDM 90 CRX HF as an EF, I say let them. It will clear up what they are referring to, just as the C5 designation of Corvettes clears up the generation model type.
I consider my "ED" as close to a stock EF as possible (as much as a USDM car can be), an unmolested 88 HB with stock internals. You would be hard pressed to find USDM spec cars in Japan claiming they are real EF's, I am sure there would be Honda enthusiasts screaming and flaming them just as people flame ricers and JDM-heads here in the US.

Europe have both EE and ED. From what I've picked up so far:
EE6 - CRX 1.4 AT
EE8 - CRX 1.6 16v VT (150hp)
EE9 - Civic 1.6 VT (150hp)
ED9 - CRX 1.6 16v (124/130hp)
ED7 - Civic 1.6 something
