Ok, so Im selling my Civic, and have decided on a 98-02 Accord...but am a bit confused as to the exact changes made between 98-00 and 01/02.
Can anyone let me know? Also, I will be buying the V6 (I wish they made the manual for V6!!) Are there things I need look for?
Also, is anyone making a CF front lip for the 01/02 models? I couldn't seem to find anything...
Thanks!

Body wise there is nothing really changed. Engine wise they only changed the ignition set up to a direct ignition coil (pack on each plug). The tranny's are known for blowing, they had a recall on them or extended it to a 100K mile waranty if nothing seemed to be wrong with current one.
In terms of doing any performance mods you can forget about it. Its either NOS or supercharger and 5K for a supercharger that gives you 50hp extra isn't worth it, and all other parts are expensive given gains you see, that's why i am going from v6 to H22.
If your not interested in performance they body wise they can be made to look very nice. The carbon fiber lip they do make but i am not sure on the company, i have seen plenty around. YOu may want to check out http://www.accordinglydone.com or http://www.AV6.com people on there would know. Other than that welcome to the grocery getter family!!!

Im sure there are more changes to the 98-00 accord but one is the front lip is different. That's all I know
Well most people are going to tell you how the tranny is crap. If you search you will find lots of threads on this. Some go out some last a good while, Its more common for the V6 to have problems. They did extend the warranty to 100,000 on the 00-02 accords. I have a 99 95,000 I do not know if its the original tranny bought the car when it had 70,000 It does shift rough sometimes but I really like my car so if my tranny goes out oh well.
If you buy one get a low milage one with an extended warranty, I think you will like the car its a little heavy but the V6 doesn't lack power
Good Luck

Thanks for the replies...Im pretty much done with any performance mods...otherwise I'd just keep the civic...Im ready for a comfortable car (with AC!!) that looks decent..
My only plans are lowering, wheels, oem lip kit (or cf front lip) and maybe a stereo upgrade. Nothing major, Im pretty tired of wrenching on cars....just want to be able to enjoy the ride...lol
do the V6's have tranny trouble even when the engine is left stock?

depends on driving style. I am pretty hard and only had Intake, headers, exhaust and VAFC. It was starting to let go a little bit, and after 4 passes on a 55 shot it was gone. WHen you take it for a test drive you will be able to tell how bad it is (shift point, and gear engagement). Also check around the bell housing and tranny pan to see any residue left over from it leaking.

Yes I think it happens to the 00-02 more commonly? (correct me if im wrong)
Its a tough decision, I just change the tranny fluid every 15K and hope it makes a difference. You should probably weigh out the pros and cons if you want a comfortable DD this is a good car. If you are going to be real hard on the tranny I would either save up for a 7'th gen V6 MT or get a 6'th gen 4CYL MT. I have read situations where people were on the 3'rd or 4'th tranny, But I have also heard of people still on the first with 140,000 I think BeachAccord might be the guy

Man, Id love to get a 7th gen 6 speed, just dont want to float the loan for it! lol
I plan on just normal DD this car (with style!)...my racing days are gone (I think), but I definately want the V6.....Guess Ill just have to test drive them to see...
But.....I would hate to think what a transmission replacement would cost!!!

Good luck with your search</TD></TR></TABLE>
I assume that is brand new? What kind of warranty do they give you with that?

i forget i think it was 1 yr 12K (don't hold me to that though) I just remember it being S* since the likely hood of it going was just the same, b/c they "claimed" to fix the problem in the replacement ones.

Just out of curiosity, who makes the supercharger, and for which engine, the 4 cyl or the 6?
**Edit - nevermind, just found it....comptech! So, no one has found a way in to increase boost with the kit?? **

I have a 98 with a 4 cyl, auto and 107k and like mentioned previously, its fine for commuting. Shitty roads in Saint Louis and NY have taken a toll on the ball joints, and the tranny will hunt for a downshift occasionally, but other than that nothing out of the ordinary (just normal wear and tear). Used cars are always a mixed bag, best you can do is go through the usual checklist and get a second opinion. Good luck!
I have heard of some modifying the pulley to get it up to 10 psi, but unless you upgraded the tranny, your messing with disaster.
The v6 accords do have transmission issues. I work at a dealer and do most of the transmission work. The 4cyl have trans problems too. I have probably replaced an equal amount of both. The warranty extension is on 00-01 Accords. It does NOT cover '02 model years. I own an '02 V6 myself, and I love it. I did however put a trans in it at about 55k. I got it covered by Honda, but this is not always the case. Their decision is based on customer history - have you spent any money at the dealer, or did you just whine about warranty issues- and they also take into consideration how much you complain. The reman transmissions from Honda are FAR FAR better than any of the aftermarket rebuilds... and come with a 3/36 warranty. My recommendation is to buy an 01 or 02 ex V6.... you will love the extra power, and it rides SOOOOO nicely. Hwy milage can be as good as 30mpg, but short trip driving can cost you in the range of 15mpg.... but the cars are wonderful.
what can be done to baby the tranny? I see alot of the trannys go out on the highway is this correct? I drive the car hard on occasion I do not know how it will affect the car

Anyone have any info on the 3.2Cl or the 3.0CL? How do they compare to the Accord V6? Any major issues with the CL line (tranny problems, recalls, etc?)
Thanks!
Thanks!
Just about all the cars the run the J series motor have tranny issues. From Odyssey to CL's. The 98-99 are said to hold longer than the rest. I have no idea as to why 02 was exempt from the 100k warranty. The 00 accords are also direct ignition rather than with a dizzy. Some say the 98-99 with the dizzy respond better to mods as well.
As for differences in body, the 01 had bumper changes on both coupe and sedan and the sedans had trunk changes. Everything is swappable though.
The tranny's are said to fail whether you ebat on it or not. They just plain suck. Ive read on TAC.com that Ford supposedly makes the tranny for the V6 Accords. It's also said that FORD makes the gauge cluster because its stamped FORD somewhere on it.
If you want the 6spd you can always swap in a 6spd from the CL-S. Go visit ww.v6p.net for more info. They are mainly dedicated to the Accord v6's.

The gauge clusters are manufactured by ford..... the transmissions are not. The main failures started to occur when the transmissions started to be manufactured in the states instead of overseas... The '02 model year was not included because they "thought" they had the problem fixed. Not so. The V6 transmissions (Acura included) have second gear problems... the 4Cyl trans missions have differential carrier bearing problems... it turns out that they reduced the width of the bearings to reduce rolling friction.... seems they reduced them a little too far. The reman transmissions have been modified to compensate for the prior flaws, and have so far been very reliable. There is really no way to "baby" the trans... you can change the fluid often, but it may or may not help. Definitly DO NOT use anything except Honda fluid, other than that just hope you got one of the good ones.
I own a 98 4cyl and a 00 v6.The 98 has 120,000 miles and runs great no problems.
The 00 runs great with 78,000 miles no problems at all.
The 98 still has the orginal timining belt.I do do tranny fluid changes every 10-15k just in case.
The 00 v6 the engine is packed tight into that car but it delivers great power.

are the 4 cylinder transmission problems there for both the auto and manual? I have a auto 4 cylinder and noticed that my warranty was extended as a result of this problem. What can be done to fix it? How will I know if it gets to a point needing replacement within the warranty period?
Thanks

The automatics are the only ones that have problems, and thus the warranty extension. The way 4 cyls usually fail is they make a noise (wah wah wah wah) from what seems like right under your feet. This noise changes with throttle and is usually only noticable under acceleration, and fades away on decel. The other common failure is an ATF leak... from the axle seal(s). As the diff bearings wear, it allows the axle to wobble in the trans, ruining the seal. I have seen it many times where some local shop has put numerous seals in to try and fix the problem, when the trans was the only fix. The only to fix basically ALL of the A/T problems on Honda's is to r&r the trans. Minor things like PRNDL switch, or a pressure switch are the exception.... but its rare.
