will these work on eg hatches that didnt come with side moldings in the first place? if not, could they be modified to work?

You mean, you have a CX or VX Civic.

The only thing you need to do is make some square holes in your doors where the molding is supposed to go. These moldings clip in using fasteners preinstalled from factory.

Or trade someone fenders and door that has teh hole , but you still have to cut two small squares for the rear quater.
