Default aluminum pipe for exhaust piping?

How well will the Aluminum 6061-T6 hold up to the exhaust's heat? I'm welding together my own pipe for my muffler and I need something that isn't expensive (this is best i've seen for the price)

thanks!

At least one person has been using an aluminum exhaust for a few months with success.

I still contend, however, that the major issue will be fatigue. Aluminum has no fatigue limit, the exhaust has a lot of vibration and aluminum's properties just get worse when heat is applied. At about 1000°F aluminum starts to creep, so of course it is no good for the downpipe.

ms would be the cheapest, why not just use that? i don't think i'd use aluminum for my exhaust... if it was a good idea, don't you think everyone else would be doing it already? i've never seen an aluminum exhaust, aluminized steel- yes.

Damn the search feature sucks. I know there is a 4" aluminum exhaust post on here, but can't find it.

Geoff @ Full Race is running a 4" aluminum exhaust I believe on his street car. I think there is a post about it in the FI section as well.

this if more specifically for making a testpipe. I don't have the skills to make a full pipe from the engine all the way back

I guess I'll just go with the 7ft steel at JCwhitney?

though I don't need all 7 feet. 3 feet at most

what size piping diameter do you need?

I have a stick of 3" OD mild steel that 10' long. If you need a small piece let me know.

I am looking at 2.25"-2.5"

3" is too big.

Look in the phone book for metal supply places local to you. You'll probably find a local place that will sell you just the length you need and at a better price then almost anywhere on the net.

I love the idea of weight savings with using aluminum,
but like you guys said, it's not tough like steel.

I mean, maybe if you used it only after the downpipe, it'd be ok.

I'd be worried about the exhaust hitting stuff too so you'd want to build it
carefully so it doesn't hang too low.

Anyone know if you can weld steel to aluminum and visa versa??
