Default B18C5 vs 2ZZ-GE (celica gts) flowbench smackdown

I volunteered my stock gt-s head for this test just to see how it adds up against a C5. The test was done by, no other than Joe Alaniz- a veteran port&polish head specialist. its stock vs stock with no work on either heads. Enjoy!!!

thats cubic feet of air/per minute at the indicated inch of valve lift.

Thats why if the GTS is driven properly, it can hang/beat ITR's.

Too bad Toyota chose not to get the gearbox right.

You have to shift above the redline very fastly in order to land on their version of vtec(vvtl-i). The GTS makes crappy power before it hits lift and if it can stay in lift it'll haul some ***.

agreed, the 1 and 2 gears are too far apart on the gt-s. in order to keep it on the high lift mode, a lost in traction must be made (ie.. redline 1st- press the clutch- get the revs way up- ingage clutch.) there are two ways one can go about fixing this problem.. increase redline to 8800rpms or close the already close ratio on 1st and 2nd gear. On the the other hand 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th are ratioed close enough to keep the engine above the switch over-point. If you consider 2nd gear to be the lowest gear used in track lapping then the celicas short coming is not at all that bad. maybe for dragsters its another story

Say they did have a vafc for the celica gts. Would that be a good idea to lower the x-over? Its on stock cams, so couldn't that screw up your whole power curve if you played around with it? I know that i wouldn't want to lower my vtec engagement on my car with my stock gsr cams. Remember they barely have anything out for that car....intake, exhaust, suspension and a bunch of neon lights.

The GTS motor 2zz is a direct swap into the MR-S which has a 1zz. My next car is going to be a MR-S

No, there are no lift engagement controler available for the 2ZZ-GE. A safc has been used but that has no bearing on lift whatsover. Even if one was to tamper with the lift solenoid to lower switch-over the fuel/ignition has to be change accordingly. the best bet would be to go with a programable software or a tuned ecu.

agreed, I think the engament point on a gsr is perfect as indicated by dyno graphs seen on that car.

yes that would be nice, however, it is more than a bolt on affair. i've heard of someone who pulled it of, but mentioned of having ecountered a problem of having 6 reverse gears and one forward. they did go around the problem tho.
