Default Tires: Hankook vs Azenis (215 or 615) looking for reviews.....

It is about that time to replace my tires. I have been running 215/45/16 azenis 215 sports for over a year now. They are the best tire for the money IMO. I am on the fence between the azenis and the hankook rs2's.

I have tried:
bridgestone potenza SO-3
bridgestone potenza RE010
yokohama advan es100

I feel that the SO-3's and RE010's handled just as good as the azenis but the es100's did not perform to my expectations. I use these for street use only.

My main reason for posting this is to find out if anyone has use the Hankook Ventus RS2's and how do they compare to the Azenis 215's. Or if anyone has read any reviews about these tires, if so please post link. thanks

There is an article on Aug. issue of Grassroots of those three tires. The RT615 came out on top. You should pick up a copy.

Todd at Frisby, who is a true car guy (he goes to the track with the tire truck, which means he's talking to track guys about their tires all day long) tells me that the Hankook RS2 Z212 is a lot like the Azenis. Meaning, they're very very sticky, stickier than even great street tires like the S-03, but they also wear very quickly, which is their downside, just like the Azenis. If you like the Azenis, you'll like the Z212.

(In most sizes, the Z212 is priced less than the new Azenis ST-615 which don't come in 215/45-16 anyway, but more than the old Azenis ST-215.)

I think the price difference is going to sell a lot of Hankooks.

When the RT615 was introduced, Discount Tire was selling them at prices so low that there was a manufacturer backlash, and Falken set a minimum price for the RT615.

Vulcan openly advertises that they sell the RT615 at the lowest price that Falken will allow. In 205-50-15 that is evidently $93.

At DTD, the Z212 in the same size is $78, and I think DTD offers free shipping right now.

That significant price difference is going to get a lot of buyers for the Z212 regardless of the Grassroots article and regardless of anybody's testimony.

I have only been to Shenandoah with the Z212 and I did not like they way they acted on some parts of the track. Especially in the bowl at about 55 they were quite squirmy and made the car a handful. In the future I think I will only go to Shenandoah on RA1 unless it's pouring rain.

The Z212 are just so cheap compared to the RT615 that I think a lot of us are going to just learn how to drive on the Z212 even though there might be some better street class tyres out there, though at a price.

As you pointed out, there's also the added advantage of having the extra 16" size available in the Z212.

Discount Tire (DTD) also carries the Falken. They sell the 205/50-15 for $97 and it, too, is eligible for their free shipping deal. It's probably a wash vs paying for shipping from Vulcan.

Just wondering... Have you tried the ST-615 there, too? Or is this only by way of comparison with the RA-1 that you're used to?

Incidentally, in this regard, earlier this year I did a track event on street tires for the first time in quite a while, and BOY was I surprised by the lack of response! It was quite an eyeful. I didn't think that track tires were all that much grippier at the time that I switched over from street tires a few years back. Now I realize that that is because I was accustomed to driving the car with street tires, and wasn't using the track tires for their full capabilities. Now I'm used to them, and I turn in at speeds where the track tires grip, and with street tires, they don't.

What I see happening is that people who take their cars to the track really do shake out how good various tires are. If one tire is clearly better than another, we're going to hear a lot about it - maybe not all tires, but track tires, and the super-sticky street tires like the Azenis and the Z212. The same way we've heard plenty about the RA-1 being so good over the past couple of years. I'm betting that six months from now, we'll know exactly where the Z212 and the ST-615 stand in the "tire-archy".

A friend of mine works at Discount Tire and he had The Azeni Sport on his ACR SRT4, and just last week replaced them with the RS2's. Actually, we just had this phone conversation yesterday as I'm looking to replace the tires on my JDM 16's...but he says the biggest difference is that the RS2's are far superior to the Azeni Sport in the rain. He also said that another guy who worked there already did an auto-x w/the RS2's on a Miata, and he felt they didn't grease up as quickly as the Azeni Sport, but had equal grip.

I think I'm sold on the RS2's. Especially since they offer 215/45/16, which is perfect size for the JDM 16's.

It happens all the time. Talk to any of our long-time resellers here.

No, I wouldn't compare them to the RA1. I have only been on Shenandoah once, and it was with the Z212.

From what I know of the carcass of the 215 Azenis, I believe I would have liked them better in the bowl. I don't think they would have squirmed that much.

The Z212 showed no sign of melting the way the 215 Azenis have been prone to do.

Are you referring to the old Azenis Sport (ST-215), or the new Azenis Sport (ST-615)?

Not on a Type R but on a WRX and STi, I've driven on both the RT-215 and the Z212.

My friend has the Azenis on his STi and I have the Z212 on my WRX, both in the same size. We both much prefer the Hankook. Dry grip is about the same, haven't tried wet grip yet, and Hankook dont get bothered by the heat as much.

As much as I'll probably get flamed for this .... I was driving on some canyon road the other day and was VERY satisfied. The Hankook squeal a little sooner but you can feel that they still have grip and you'll know when reaching the limit sooner than the Azenis. Also, the tires just seemed to get better as I pushed them rather than melting like the 215.

If I have money after Vegas this weekend, I'll be at an autox at the end of this month, and will hit Willow Springs after summer.

I bought a set of Hankook RS2's a couple of weeks ago- they replaced a set of bald 215's. Initial impressions are good. They are infinitely better in the rain, I had forgotten that it's possible drive over 40mph in the rain without hydroplaning! They are also significantly quieter. The sidewalls are not as stiff, so turn in is not quite as good as on the 215's, but they do stick extremely well once you're done transitioning. All in all, it's a choice I'd make again.

I haven't autocrossed on them yet, but they're going to be my rain tires anytime there's standing water. I don't want to afford dirt-stockers!

I think you should go with the new kumhos. Pepboys has a sell now 4 for $99. They might not hold down all that power, but you can burn em all you want. HAHA j/k I am bout to bet a set of the new azenis. A guy at my work has them and likes them alright. I got a pic of your car next to the safari R. I will mail that **** to you.

Those are not the Kumho performance tires. They're not the top-of-the-line Kumho Ecsta MX. They're not even the budget performance Kumho Ecsta SPT. They're the all-season Kumho ASX - which is fine if you plan to use your tires in the snow as well as in the summer. Oh, and the prices vary depending on what size you're looking for...

i just put these on my 96 corolla in 195/50/15 and ive had Azenis sport and several cars in the past. I like the fact that these are cheap and are very good in the rain but the Azenis have definitely better straight line dry braking. I can lock the wheels and make it slide in my corolla where as with my MX6 which has much better factory brakes I couldnt even come close to locking the wheels. But overall I would go with the Hankook's because of price and close enough performance. If $ meant nothing to me I would still go with the Azenis. Only have about 3k on these so far but so far no real noticable wear

funny this came back.

I'm picking up tires here shortly and through my searching I found that edgeracing.com has the cheapest prices for these tires. You can get 205/45/16 Hankook's for 357.36 and 205/40/16 Falken 615 for 384.08. And 205/50/15 Hankook's for 345.36 and 205/50/15 Falkens for 395.00.
