Technial Questions : AGX vs. Illuminas
I have a couple questions on the KYB AGX and the Tokico Illuminas.
1.) What are the highest spring rates for each strut.
2.) Which strut is overall better and why.
Thanks Guys.
Jay
BTW- I have searched on this topic but all that is listed is things like I use this strut and its great for what I do. Its just opinions. There is really no technical on the 2.

I've taken both apart and dyno tested some Honda and Mustang ones. Generally they are not that drastically different internally although the valving selections per vehicle can change some. Both use a bleed only adjustment that has some effect on rebound amd very limited effect on bump. The adjustments have no effect of oil travelling through the piston itself, just oil flow around the piston through changing metered orifices. The difference from max to min range can change per application. On Mustang, AGX has a pretty fair rebound change but no rear change at all, the Illumina front does very little but has more rear change. For Civic front, I'd say the AGX was a narrow change over a wider piston speed vs. the Illumina at a wider force change over a narrower range of piston speeds.
The Illumina has a low friction piston coating/ring but no ability to expand for wear and the AGX has a piston surface that is more likely to wear (more exposed metal to metal) but a narrow plastic ring that can expand somewhat for wear compensation. Basically these to are pretty similar low to mid range adjustable shocks at similar price points. From what I've seen, there is not really that much to make differentiation between them.
