Default build for skunk2 pro 1's itr motor.

i had a question, well....kind of suggestions is what i was looking for in the upcoming build for this winter. my setup consists of this right now.

Jdm itr head..........

portflow valve springs
portflow retainers
jun stage2 intake cam
ctr exhaust cam
srr cam gears
aebs intake manifold
ported 65-70mm itr throttle body
outlaw engineering gasket kit
ceramic coated an-r header

Jdm itr block.........

itr crank/rods/pistons
freshly hoaned
new acl rod/main/thrust bearings
arp rods bolts (9mm bolts)
arp head studs

I would like to run skunk2 pro1 cams for next year. I want more of a gradual power band, unlike my jun2 intake cam with has a very harsh vtec x over. The car is for road racing, and sometimes thats not the best for that.

I was thinking of keeping the motor the way it is, but milling the head .030 and running a 2 layer mugen head gasket to bump up the compression. But still keeping the stock rods and pistons, but still using the arp hardware. I will replace the portflow valvetrain with the skunk2 valve train, and get rid of the jun2, ctr set up. And get everything tuned with hondata of course. Does this sound like a good setup to you guys? I was just curious, i was not sure how much compression i should run with these cams. Keep in mind, that after this i do not want to touch my motor for a while, and just keep it on the track as much as possible. Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

For a "road race" motor and keeping a stock block, I might not opt for a S2 Pro 1. Are you going to running the stock rev limiter? I also would not do the S2 valvetrain unless you're maybe doing the NEW S2 Pro valvetrain, or even better the RM gen 2 spring/retainers. From the way it sounds I would opt for maybe a BC3+ camshaft, something that is really going to excell in the area that you are building the motor for. The BC3+'s have an awesome midrange but tend to die off around 8k. The S2 Pro1's would beat the BC3+ in top end, but the 3+ would dominate it in the midrange, where you would need your power for road racing. Good luck man!

Having dynoed both the BC3+ and Pro 1, the Pro 1, has better bottom, +5 before VTEC, and + 8 at 8200. It would be a good RR cam. I might mill the head, but stick with a 3 layer .028, head gasket. VTEC on the Pro1 is 5400-5500 but can be changed up and down depending on the track and gear ratio's with put much change to the TQ curve.

I am not running the stock rev limiter right now, my i replaced all hardware, besides main studs with arp, and i have portflow valvetrain right now. I do not take it past 8500, cuz i dont see myself making power past there just for the fact that these cams seem to make power tuned up to 7800. Only reason i built the motor the way i did, is for hard downshifting, and reliability on the track. I have a friend of mine milled his head .040 on a stock itr motor, running toda b's. Car pulls extremely well, and has a very smooth power band, wich is what i am looking for. I saw that the skunk pro 1's seem to have a similar power band. I am running a stock ys1 lsd trans in my crx as far as gearing goes, and i already have hondata, so i can manipulate the motor as i please to suite the powerband of the cams. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the opinions guys. I think i am looking for a little more aggressive cam than the bc3 tho.

the pro1 primary lobe is huge, explaining the not so smooth ide, but also explaining the excellent low end/mid range.

are we losing valvetrain reliability with such huge primaries?

great question, i'm hoping that someone knowledgeable will answer. I'm currently running the pro 1's with RM gen 2 springs and retainers........
