rwd rex
i am in a tangle and i need some help. i am contimplating on making a rwd rex. i have money and time but i have no clue as to were to start. i have sen pics of the rwd delsol and of a rwd h22 hatch. but i want something that is going to wheele and is going to be for DRAG only. this is not going to be street legal im going to be doing it at the local track. i think the best bet would be a front clip then make mesure ments and cut out what i dont need. this is going to go in a 91 rex. and if i do start this i will keep you all informed with pics/info. so if you all no any one that could be of help with this project let me know.
thanks
thanks

Really it's all custom, nobody can help you with it because nobody here has done it exactly as you'll have to do it. There isn't a how-to, a FAQ, or anything remotely informative to what you're trying to do. The measurement are all your own, the parts such as a driveshaft and rear differential are all your own. You could take the entire drivetrain from a Camaro and put it in... wouldn't have to make your own custom driveshaft at least...
This is one of those things where if you have to ask, you shouldn't be doing it.
I say get a corrola and become a drifter. Or get a K20 and become a really cool CRX'er.
Why doesn't Hasport make a RWD kit yet???
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
thanks

Exactly. If you have so much at your disposable, just drop a k20 in there. It'll be plenty fast. But if you like RWD, sorry you just bought the wrong car. Go buy a s13 and drop a sr20 in it.
..and if you have so much why not buy an FD?

Yeah, like Shake said, the idea may be cool and 'hardly ever done', but its not very practical. You could easily find a car cheap that will more easily accept a engine for rwd. Get an older rx7 or supra, and put some crazy engine in. But if you must, try to understand the rwd car. The crx has fully independant suspension, while most domestic rwd do not. So research and consider what will give you the best straight line drag performance. Then find a matching drive train that can hold the power you plan on running. Someone was succesful with using a civic wagon awd rear drivetrain, but then the stock car was only running with ~100 hp, and will definitely not hold up to the power you will be running. Then find engine dimensions and see if the engine will fit along with the tranny. You will likely have to cut up the firewall and center line of car to get a tranny and drive axle to fit. Built a custom rear crossmember. Man, just thinking about this, its going to be a lotta work. My brain is fried this morning, all I can think of so far. But just think about these things and determine if its worth it for a crx.
or you could just tube the car and run a rear engine with the standard honda configuration engine with drive shafts. put a k24 in, and turbo! would probably have to build a fire wall behind the seat; no need to look out the rear. Then install a air/water IC with ice tank in pass compartment.
I at one time contemplated a rear wheel drive CRX using a S13 rear end, S2000 engine and 6 speed tranny but filed that away under "I can't weld that good"
Oh well, mental masturbation, gotta love it!

get an old bmw like a 2002 or a 320i and drop in a F20c (BMW's accept other engines pretty easily) fully independent suspension front and rear, rear wheel drive, honda power...... and the s2000 engine/tranny are the most expensive parts.
i may be completly wrong but wouldnt making your crx rdw mean you lose lots of torque.
i mean if all the weight, like ur engine, is on top your wheels then you would catch traction better but moving your drive wheels to the back means less weight on the wheels that power the car. so that means slower drag times and its gonna be a drag only car.

the rear end transfer case is going to add weight to the back. If this were a problem, why are there so many front engine rwd? Its not a big thang. For all the work to fit a front engine rwd into a crx, you might as well do a rear engine, which will save you trying to find a rear end, just modify the rear suspension to use a setup similar to the front with hubs that accept the drive shaft.
I don't it's the matter of buying the wrong car but proving this can be done. There are many weirdo combinations out there, like the crx with nsx engine sitting in the hatch
Lots of custom jobs done - but if you're going to take on this task for you to prove it can be done and to be different, asking an internet isn't going to help you any. With a fabrication like that, in my opinion, it's really all hands on since we cannot see how a particular drive train will line up with your car, even with pictures
Anyway, to answer your question - how you start a project like you - know what you want. Anything can be done with skillful thinking, working hands and time

Why do you want to do wheelies? The finish line is in front of you, not above. Don't waste time going up. There's nothing up there. If you wanna do wheelies, get a motorcycle.

I think that would be a waste of time to make a rwd crx, plus you would have to relocate the engine if you dont want to lose torque. And why would you want to do wheelies. That would not make your times better at all.
someone DID make a rwd 'rex in 1985 actually it was a 4wd rex with 2 engines
i think it was in Road&Track or Car&Driver sometime in 1985. they did several driving tests with this car..hmmm...hell i don't remember which mag 'cuz that was 20 years ago! you may be able to search this out on Google or maybe in your local library's magazine archives.

i am planing on puting an ls/vtec in the back. i dont want to do wheelys all the time just when i wanna show off. i have seen it done and it isnt that bad but the only thing that is going to suck is all the fabing. like i said this was just a thought but i feel like this is some thing i need to do. and the ls/vtec is going to be turbo. sorry to the people who thought i was mining v-8 in front and drive shafts and rear dif.
