Default Buying over-stock helmets.

I'm looking for a 3rd helmet to swap into my regular rotation (I ride several times a day and I don't want my blingy Arais to start stinking.

I found a nice helmet, not used at all but manufactured in '02.

How old does a helmet need to be before it starts to go bad? Assuming it's not been used at all. I know the window is 5 years assuming it's worn regularly.

I think I heard 3 years if worn regularly. It needs to be inspected or some chit like that. I think if you know where your helmet's been through out it's life, it's fine. But if you buy second hand, only God knows. I'd be more afraid of the care that went into your helmet during shipping. These UPS and FedEX clowns don't give a ****.

Yeah, true.

I'm looking at a bunch of Arais on eBay, some new, some not.

I've already got a Quantum/f and a Signet GTR, and I just want to keep them smelling nice.

One of the front-runners was made in 02, never been worn. The other saw one season, but it's really sexy and cheap.

The shipping does worry me, though.

the 5-year thing is even if it hasent been worn, the issue is that as the foam ages, it hardens and no longer will crush to absorb impact. it hardens over time no matter if its used or not

i wouldnt have an issue buying an '02 tho myself, i normally replace my helmet every other year, so that would still be in the 5-year window for me

Hmm.

How does $260 for a racer-replica Arai Astral with a manufacture date of 9/02 sound?

New? Not bad. But why would a helmet be so old and yet not used/sold?

My guess is that it's an overstock. A dealer probably held onto it and never sold it, then let go of it as part of some kind of liquidation program.

I'm guessing that if you don't sell one of these fancy repli-racer lids within the first year or two of its life, people won't pay top dollar for them. The dealers then are probably more inclined to clear them out to make space for the new blingy lids, rather than discount them individually, so they probably sell them in bulk to some kind of liquidation or auctioneering service.
