HELP! : starting problems...questions about relay....
i have a 2000 civic hb dx, well i guess its a common problems with hondas once engine gets hot it has trouble starting up agian....i know its a relay....my questions are....
1. everyone says the problem is the PGM relay right??
2. i ordered the relay from honda and the relay i got is the main relay (part#39400-s01-a01) it doesnt look like the pgm relay, its a lot bigger....is this the right relay to fix the problem??
*i found where this relay goes in my car its above the ecu on the side...i saw it once i took out the glove box cover...
3. if this isnt the right relay where is my pgm located on my 2000 civic?
TIA!!

ok guys well i fixed the relay and the car still has problems starting! i dont know what else to check! brand new cap and rotor, new ignition coil(basically i have a new distributer), new relay, fuel pump works fine! im lost guys any help is appreciated! TIA
I had the same problem in my 92 Si, but replacement of the main relay fixed it.
Also, mine was located under the kickplate driver's side, but mine is a lot older so it may have been moved in later years.

any codes? It might be your coolant temp sensor. I had the same problem, once it gets hot and you shut it off it wont start.
I replaced the relay and dizzy, thinking it was the igniter. Its on the left side of the head , two wires.

i didnt really test it....i just read on the board and from what other honda techs told me that the relay is a common problem with honda and so is the igniter coil....i have a new coil and the problem still occured so next option was the relay...the relay i changed was the main relay...is there any other relays i should check???

Why waste money on parts that may or may not be bad? Test the parts you are replacing as this will save you money and time diagnosing the problem (notice you're still dealing with this and you are out how much money?) See my point?
And just because things are 'common' problems doesn't mean your car is experiencing those same problems...I have seen hundreds of posts about the main relay in cb7's and I haven't had to replace mine ever.
I would look at your main fuel relay which is at the side kick panel somewhat under your steering wheel. Also check all relays in your fuse panel in your engine bay.

When the car doesn't want to start, listen for the fuel pump to see if it's priming or not.. if it's not its your PGM-FI Main relay.. Under your hood release latch and you can fix it for free with a soldering gun and some solder..
Pull the relay and pry it apart and resolder the cracked/damaged joints.. not hard at all if you have questions or need the writeup PM me.

This happened to me. I was working on my car in the garage, and pulled it outside and it sat in 100degree weather for about 10 minutes (black on black). The car wouldnt start. Checked spark...had spark. Poped the top off the fuel filter...no fuel. So i took the cover off my fuel pump and just ran a wire from the battery to the pump...pump turned on. So i got under my driverside kick pannel and pulled out the main relay and there is a dry solder join that always goes bad in those and sure enough if you looked really close...it was cracked. So I re-soldered it and put it back in and it started right up. Electricty doesnt like heat....so when its cold it might be able to jump a small crack, but when it gets hot....no dice. Hope this helps

hey, you need to change your ignitor. It is located in the distributor beneth the coil. You first need to know which brand that you car carries, either Hitachi or NEC (Tec Westec). That will fix you up!
i already changed the ignitor....i replaced it with one i got from a 99 distributor....
also i was told the main relay i got is a multi purpose relay...fuel pump ignition..etc? is this right for a 99-00 civic?? or does it still ahve the fuel pump relay on the drivers side? does anyone have a pic of what it looks like? TIA
mine runs the ecu and the fuel pump on my 93 civic. Pull that relay out, crack in open and look for cracks around the solder joint. Im 99% sure thats your problem

so im pretty confused on what the problem can be...

Isolate your problem....
Are you getting power to the relay? If so, when you energize the relay...do you get power on the other side? If so, the relay is good. If not, your problem is between the battery and relay. If you have power at the relay and no power at the pump...then its the wiring from the relay to the pump. Hardest thing is setting up the condition to where it wont start for problems that are intermittant

the thing is i hear the relay when the engine primes i also hear the fuel pump....i made a toggle swithc for my fan so i can turn it on when i park to help cool the engine faster...seems to be helping...but what other relays should i be checking??
