Dumb timing belt question
This may be a dumb question and I am pretty sure I know the answer, but I had to ask.
If your timing belt breaks, then you most likely will have valve and cylinder damage right?
What are the effects of a broken timing belt (assume at speed, on the highway for example).
I am asking in reference to a stock Type-R, no mods internally.

from my experience with timing belt snapping on the road while traveling 40-50mph will be not cause bent valves. The engine will automatically shut down on you ....what causes bent valves is when people come to a stop and keep cranking there engine whens the timings are all off....thats the cause of having bent valves.....correct me if im wrong...thats just my personal experience with 3 cars with snapping timing belt while driving and no bent valves....

With the clutch out, your car's momentum will spin the motor enough to bend the valves.
Were your other cars interference motors? Manual transmission? In a non-interference motor, the valves won't hit the piston even if the cam timing is off (or the belt snaps). In an interference motor (like the ITR's), the valves have enough travel to get smacked pretty hard by the piston if they don't get out of the way in time.

Did you fail to replace the timing belt at the recommended service interval? (THREE TIMES???) Or was there some other cause?

) different between interference and non-interference engine???</TD></TR></TABLE>
In an interference motor, the piston's path will cross the valve's path, but not at the same time.
So, a fully open valve has to close before the piston comes up and crushes it. That's why a timing belt failure is expensive in most of our motors, valves get bent to hell.

It has nothing to do with the B18.
It has to do with motor design in general.
But hell, what do I know, I only design flight systems

High Lift cams + higher compression motors = hard to design a compact non-interference motor.
Would you rather have a 150hp 3.0 inline 6 just so you have a non-interference motor?
