is it common for honda trannies to grind, especially during quick shifts?

i know this occured very often with my old tranny equipped with a POS short shifter. but, i thought the guy that sold me the swap just ripped me off.
so, i drove my brother's friend's 99 si a while back and remembered that whenever i shifted really quick either from first to second or second to third (with a long throw stock shifter), it would grind each and everytime.
so, are honda trannies prone to grinding during quick shifts? i haven't driven my car hard yet since the rebuild and would like to know if this is true and what precautions i can take to prevent this.
TIA

Uhhh...I think you just cant drive, your timing is off, also are you one of those guys whos throws/bangs the shifter farther then it was meant to go/that will cause a tranny to get runied? if you are talking about cable trannies thats another story and you have to learn its quirks, when your grinding long throw shifter its cause you released the clutch to soon/or never depressed it in the first place. dont flame me, i dont think there is another explanation
Adujst your clutch length !
The shorter your clutch engagement length is , the faster you push it in and come off , and unless your hands are superquick you can't keep up with
speed your foot goes in and out !
So just lengthen it a little , then tell me what happens . it should work

Honda trannies are notorious for having weak transmissions as far as the grinding goes. I think its do to them having weak synchro's that wear down over time. I have a friend who has a 00 s2000 and it already has started to grind. Good thing he's got that warranty!!! I bought a B18C motor with tranny and when we put the motor and tranny in my car the tranny that came with the motor wouldn't even go into 3rd!! Best thing to do is try and shift fast and smooth. In otherwords, don't use all your force and smack that thing into gear. Also, a lot of people say that you will have problems with your tranny if you use anthing besides Honda MTF(manual transmission fluid). Most trannies are prone to grinding at higher RPM's. just baby your tranny as much as you can and practice on your shifting techniques!
I honostly dont know what you people are talking about as far as "bad" or weak trannies, I'm very rough on mine with a stage 4 clutch and it handles it like a champ. I've even fudged up a few times bad enough to make me think I fried a syncro, and after 60 k on a very heavily raced motor the tranny has no mechanical problems.
My buddy's old CRX sounds like **** when he speed shifts. Especially going into 2nd, the grinding is BAD!
Speed shifts and has bad grind... that makes perfect since.
Nogaro..
Would love to see a pic of the WRX... I have a Uk STi.. putting out 270bhp... love it..

on my si, occasionally it will grind going into 2nd or 3rd. there are tons of people on clubsi that have reported having the same problem. honda does have a technical service bulletin out that recognizes it, and should be covered under the warranty. hth

puss!es who talk **** to someone and afterwards say "don't hit me, i didn't mean to talk ****?"
and there is an explanation to this because first off, my assumptions were correct because after tearing the tranny apart last week to put in a quaife, the synchros were gone and that is why the tranny has always grinded since my purchase of the swap. and as for my brother's friend's SI, i found out recently from my brother that his friend sold the SI because the first and second gear synchro was gone and they didn't have the money for the repairs or a new tranny. and that is due to the fact that his wife received her training in driving a manual transmission in THAT car.
and those were the only two five speed hondas (including my car) i have driven. that is the reason for the question because from my experiences with those two cars i thought it was a common occurence. yes, i can drive. thank you very much

keep your mouth shut newbie and what the hell is a "sycro?"
Just because his post count is low doesn't mean that he is newbie. Jesus, I never understand you people that ask for advice and then get all pissed when people are candid and try to help you.
lets start the flame war right here, I am so sorry I replied to your stupid post in the first place because I knew it was a ridiculous question, honda trannies do not grind unless they are broken, how do you break them??? by learning to power shift and snafu'ing all the gears / syncromesh - ever wonder why there are so many trannies for sale. Just takes some common sense to know that quality Honda/acura products only fail after sever mistreatment.
Thanks for wasting all of our time.

Thanks for wasting all of out time.
and i don't powershift my tranny, as i told you before, the complete changeover i purchased came with a messed up tranny.
it is a "stupid post" and yet, you're still responding.
"Thanks for wasting all of out time." wtf LOL

you sure are touchy on the subject of not being able to shift properly, guess you get people making fun of your poor driving ability a lot, or do you have deep resentment for shifters since you had one shoved up your ***!
suggest we dont respond to each other's posts anymore - kindly confirm by return, this would be best for all Honda-Tech users who should not be subjected to arguing.

I've talked with a lot of Honda/Acura owners over the past few years including guys (and the occasional girl) running Civics, Preludes and Integras.
My conclusion is that the synchros in Honda trannies are their weakest link. So, I stress that people use the right oil in them (Honda MTF or Red Line MTL) and if you wanna "play" (speed shift, or drive hard), be prepared to pay ($$$).
I've heard people blam Red Line MTL for failing synchros but it seems to happen with cars (especially Preludes) running MTF or 10W30 motor oil (which I don't recommend anyone use anymore).
Once the car begins to grind as you upshift, the synchros are already in serious trouble and you probably ought to be awful gentle with it from that point on or plan on repairing/replacing the tranny soon therafter.
