Tornado went through AMS last night

A strong tornado *could* have wiped the area flat. Its hard to say about the quality of construction without seeing it up close.

I'm sure those were pretty strong winds...I'm mean look...multiple trailers were overturned. That ain't easy.

That shizzle came through my town this morning. I woke up to a tornado warning for Cleveland county (that's where I live).

Whoa! I had heard the speedway had some storm damage...but Damn!
As for the heavy damage to the suites... I wonder if the "bowl" layout of the speedway and grandstands has some sort of accelerating effect on the winds? As winds sweep across the infield, and shoot up the grandstands, do the captured winds slam into the suites even harder?

Looks pretty normal to me. Those suite buildings are just steel frames with galvanized skin stretched over them. 100+ mph winds will do that to just about anything that isn't structural steel or concrete when it's up that high off the ground.

It's really a matter of the tornado's intensity. Given that it was in GA, I'd say it wasn't very intense. I've seen small tornado's do little more than tear a limb off a tree here and there. However, the big ones... like the guy in Twister said, "The finger of God..". The F5 that hit Moore OK a few years back (20 miles from me) took 6" of topsoil out of the ground in places and pulled the pavement off the streets. Unbelievable...

You're not kidding. My wife's parents live in Midwest City and we visted Moore the last time we were there and to say an F5 causes significant damage is an understatement. There is a reason 90% of the houses are made out of brick and 1 story high.

same thing I was thinking.. the place wasn't built to withstand a tornado.. they said it was estimated to be an F2 with 150ish mph windspeeds..
in fact, the irony is, they say the bowl shape of the speedway is what helped circulate the winds and start the tornado in the first place..
place sure did take a lot of damage though.. maybe they won't be able to hold NOPI there this year..

I guy I know that works in management at Lowe's Motor Speedway (sister track) said the damage was 50 million
.
Heck, Bruton Smith's investments probably earned 50 mil last week, so this is just a bump in the road!
