What does it take to get my audio to sound as good as a stock BMW/audi/lexus? I dont want a big sound system at all. just something that is semi decent without too much extra weight. I realise these cars have up to 12 speakers, but what are my options here?

Start with a good HU, $500 will get you a very good Alpine, [with everything built in that you need] http://www.alpine.com a good set of components or point source for up front, again $500 will get a great sounding set of JL http://www.jlaudio.com or Eclipse, http://www.eclipse-web.com or Alpines, and there are many more out there, [with speakers you realy need to listen to them to find ones you like] for the rear I would install a set of mid range or mid bass speakers, $200 [no tweeters, unless you are doing "surround sound"] a good 4ch amp to run the fronts and rears, under $500 , unless you want big watts [Alpine or JL] a 10" sub $200 and an amp, under $500, again unless you want big power, [JL] Whatever you end up getting remember although SQ is dependent on a lot of things, [speakers, amps and install] the HU will be your most important decision. The pricing I have given you is very general, and can be +/- a lot, you can get very good sound for a $1000, but you can also spend 1000s more 94

I have a rather small system and it will blow away any stock system short of a Bentley with the Alpine F1 status but that's not a fair comparison.

I have an Eclipse head unit, Precision power EQP (preamp/EQ), JL Audio 300/4 amp running everything, JL Audio 13.5" W1 Sub, and MB Quart reference 6.5" mids up front. It rocks and is very simple.
