The passenger-side fan is making horrible noises. Mostly when the AC is on or when the engine is cooling off. The mechanic dude says the whole fan needs replaced. Can you replace the fan's motor or is he correct? And are they really as expensive as they say?

I appreciate your info. I certainly don't want to pay the >$300 they said it would take to replace the fan.

 

get an aftermarket fan motor ,,some come complete with shroud and blade for around 100-120- dollars

 

75 for a good condition used oem fan motor from a junkyard as well.

 

Where would you suggest I look for an aftermarket fan motor? I'm not too knowledgable about aftermarket dealers. Any particular suggestions?

Well I stopped by the old parts shop. Apparently complete fans or the fan motors individually aren't really very expense at all. The motor only was ~$55.

I would suggest you change it ASAP, I had a fan that was making some noise, and while on a road trip, the fan ceased. Not only did it try to keep running (you know how they do when you turn the car off) but it melted itself out of it's plastic housing. We were at a rest area and came back to the car saying what's that smell? Also we had it change at a junk yard in Georgia for 65 bucks installed. Been working fine ever since.

BTW the original fans had 330,000 miles on them. Much like everything else on the car so I guess I can't complain they made noise for like 6 months before it finally stopped working.
