Default Found old alarm in my CRX

HA! I recenttly bought a 88 Si and I found a UNGO 5100 P alarm brain under the seat. I also found the siren and everything was wired up, but I think the brain is fried. I think they made the alarm in like the late 90's lol. A quick question for tha alarm pros...since everything is already wired up can't I just get any alarm and match the wires for an install? Or at least buy an UNGO. I noticed their wiring is pretty much the same. I don't see the point in rewiring everything, when it's all been done for me. Thoughts?

I'm not an expert but if you go to sounddomain.com forums, and go to the security forum, and read the stickies, you'll find everybody trashing on UNGO. So maybe invest in something better.

So the Ungo brain is fried, but you think using it's wiring is a good idea?

Car alarms have about a 2 year technology window, in other words anything more than 2 years old is obsolete. Start by removing ALL of the Ungo wiring and components, then move on to repairing any damage it caused (nicked wires, spliced grounds, aftermarket connectors, etc).

After all of the Ungo is in the garbage and the car is back to factory you can get on with a quality alarm system.

Make sure the brand and model you choose are popular in your area and it will make service and parts easier.

If you're looking to save time, just inspect the install that was done previously. Take a look at the wires and make sure everything looks good, the connections are soldered, etc. If you don't have a remote for the UNGO system it would be pretty hard to tell if it's fried, a pulled fuse, etc.

if the wire all looks good, then you could use the existing wiring and test each wire to the UNGO brain to double check the function of the wire. Any extra wires your new system would need you'd obviously have to run yourself. It would save you time... but some people are going to argue about this wire could be bad, this or that... but it's like if an amp is already installed in your car with 4 guage wiring, nice twisted pair RCAs run down the opposite side, and everything tests out and the install was done properly... where's the need to rip out the RCA's and power wire to install an amp that 4 guage would be enough for?

I agree. I did chase down the wires for everything and it was installed properly and well hidden. I can't fathom ripping out all the old wiring and re-running new wire when everything is in place. Actually the siren went off a while back when I replaced the battery lol. From this stand point I can't tell whether the brain is fried or if there is another issue. I'm going to buy a UNGO off ebay and try it out. I don't want to pay $350 for a new alarm install when the most time consuming task as already been done for me. I know very little about alarm installation so isn't there a way to manually turn the alarm on? I know the siren works b/c it went off so doesn't that mean the brain works? I've looked at the install manuals at 12volt and UNGO wiring hasn't changed much over the years.

Do you have the remote for that UNGO system that's already installed? You could try to find a replacement remote for the version you have, and see if you can't find the instructions online if you want a real easy DIY'er. That or you could even find a better unit (DEI Viper for example), just the unit w/o install, and wire it in where your UNGO brain is at now.

I tried looking for the remote online but they don't make it anymore. Shows you how old the alarm is. But someone went through some effort to hide this alarm and the wiring. I actually bought a new UNGO today since the wiring is almost the same as the old one. But I think any alarm would have been acceptable. If the new UNGO works I will have saved a lot of money. Thanks for the replies guys.
