Isn't he talking about handling? If he is then I don't think there is a replacement for a FWD handler than a ITR (Yes I know what a Lotus Elise is.)
Now, if you're talking about just looks...

i had the opportunity to drive my buddies dads mini cooper s...he had 13 inch wheels on it..they were too big.everytime i tried to whip it into a corner it would rub hard and throw off the steering...it cant touch a crx's handling capabilities.[QUOTE=Master Shake]

I *think* he was referring to the New MINI Cooper S... But the old ones were supposed to handle really great, too, at least in their time.
By all accounts, the New MINI (that's how they refer to it, with the "Mini" in all caps) is an outstanding-handling little car. I haven't had a chance to drive one yet, but I plan on it. I know one girl locally (don't laugh or make "but she's just a girl" disparaging remarks - she's also quite a good autocrosser) who just bought a new Cooper S, and she is just insanely in love with its handling. And she's got a bit of experience with CRXs, having owned a '90 DX since it was new, and autocrossed it for at least the last 6 years, when she isn't co-driving her ITR. She's not giving up the CRX or the ITR, but she says the Mini outhandles them both. Also, although her CRX is a mere DX, it's only a DX in name and chassis designation; all suspension pieces have been upgraded, and she installed a rear swaybar to help it rotate.
Also, another friend who autocrosses just moved his '99 Civic Si into a Street Tire class, because he was sick of getting his *** handed to him by a trio of New MINIs that showed up and ran in his old class (G Stock). His car was typically 3-4 seconds quicker than anything else in the class (in a large local group), and he is quite a good driver, but these three MINIs showed up on street tires, all stock, no mods at all, with novice drivers, and they were driving circles around his Civic. There was talk, at least locally, of trying to lobby the SCCA to reclass the cars into a class that would be a bit more competitive for all involved, instead of simply turning the G Stock class into "The New MINI Class". The evidence I've seen leads me to believe that the New MINI is quite an accomplished FWD dancer, and not something to be easily dismissed... I want one, but wouldn't give up any of my CRXs for it, unless someone was stupid enough to want to trade me straight-up for one of them.
