Fire suppression system nozzle placement
I'll be taking delivery of a 10lb system in the next couple weeks but in preparation for it I wanted to get a good sense of the best places to position the nozzles. The kit comes with up to six nozzles although I really don't think I'll be using any more than 4 of them.
The system is H2O based - I'll be placing one nozzle in the car facing myself/legs, another at the fuel rail, one at the oil cooler and filter. What other location(s) would you suggest? I don't have a fuel cell but i may invest in one in a year or two. This is a track only car used in sprint races (20-30 minutes in duration).

You will want to place the nozzles in both the engine bay and drivers compartment. The GCR requires that the driver be protected with at least 1 nozzle. The fact is that a 10 pound system can provide enough for both areas using no more than 3 nozzles when coupled to an AFFF bottle. Our Firefox AFFF is an engine bay only and I have pictures - eMail for them. If I want to add a 2.5 the nozzle will be under the dash pointed at me. I would not bother with the cooler location unless it is really buried. Foam will get most everywhere under the hood and stay there a very long time. For our CRX the intake manifold/fuel rail area is primary as that will get the foam down around the filter etc.
Something that has been proven in testing by Firefox is that over 98% of ALL fires originate in the engine bay and can spread from there. Tony Stweart found this out. NASCAR does not require engine bay protection-just driver nozzles. There are several SCCA Pro teams using multiport systems and large cylinders. You can also protect yourself with a simple 2.5 handheld in addition to the bottle as I am doing now.

Thanks for the speedy reply! The use of a fire suppression system is actually not mandatory in our GCR (Ontario, Canada). I'd rather be overly safe, if there is such a thing. I've never seen the foam in action but I take it from your response that it quickly spreads and fills the area, suffocating flames.
You have it right. Firefox is a great firm to deal with. Give them a call if you have not already bought a system. The info on their website is also useful. Nozzle placement and alignment are very important. They are ~4 miles from my shop and serve some very famous race teams.
The whole point of the foam is to smother and cool. This removes 2 elements of the "fire triangle" from the equation and gives the driver time to escape. Their product is completely safe as to the environment as well. Cleanup is simple too.

I'm just running 3, but left the option to cap one and put one on a fuel cell should I ever use one..
1 on me(lower extremeties/torso), 2 in the engine bay currently.. one on the firewall slightly left and one further to the right pointed at the fuel rail..
