just changed mine on my Y5. Yes it is metal and if your just starting the head gasket project lemme give you some advice. If you sticking w/ the timing belt that's on it then just adjust the tensioner and slip the belt off the cam gear. Hold it back w/ a bungee cord. The crank shaft bolt is a beeotch (as seen here: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1296365) That is my thread on the damn crank bolt. Anyways, while your in there you'll prolly wanna replace the dizzy cap, rotor button, thermostat, and thermo switch. BTW, you can take the head off w/ the dizzy, cam, cam gear, rocker arms, intake and exhaust manifold all intact. It's a lot easier.

cool thanks for the advice. I think I might go with a cometic head gasket instead of stock so it is a little stronger.

I leave everything behind and most pro techs do. you won't have to undo much in the way of wires or hoses that way. The manifolds slip back after being unbolted...get the head checked for warpage by a professional shop if you don't own a machinist straight edge. Ideally the block should be checked for deck warpage as well...assuming that this gasket is being swapped as a result of failure. It's up to you though. Good luck.
