oil light stays on for 5-6 sec. after start up
I know it's regular for the oil light to stay on 1-2 seconds after start up while the engine biulds pressure, but mine stays on 5-6 seconds after start up, then goes away like normal. After that pressure is normal ~40psi. Can anyone suggest a reason for this or if this is really bad for the engine?

Mine does this. I change my oil every 3000 miles, I always use a Honda filter and 10w-30 oil. I have plenty of oil in my car, but it always stays on for 4-6 seconds when I start my car.
Just make sure you have plenty of oil and you'll be fine.

changed oil and filter 300 miles ago, 10w30 oil.
this started happening after I changed the oil pump (before this i had constant NO oil pressure)

Like mentioned if you have enough oil you should be fine. Just in case I would hook up a pressure guage to see what psi your oil pump is pushing.
It's not normal. It should go off within a second when the engine is fired.
Definitely check if the oil-pump pick up screen is clogged.
I cocur with HondaFanatic708, install an oil pressure gauge and find out what PSI you're running at.

oil pressure on the gauge does not move until the 5 or 6 seconds. after that is jumps right to about 40psi on cold start (~1700 rpms)
pick up screen is clean and fine, no cloggs there
not parked on a hill, happens when parked on flat-ish ground.

I would assume that if there is ample oil pressure. Check it again, the factory service manual says to:
1.Connect a tach (or you could have someone watch it inside the car.)
2.Remove the oil pressure switch and install an oil pressure guage.
3. Start the engine. Shut it off immediately if the guage registers no oil pressure. Repair the problem before continuing..
4. Allow the engine to reach operating temp. (fan comes on at least twice) The pressure should be:
Engine Oil Pressure:
Oil Temp: 176°F (80°C)
At idle: 70kPa (0.7 kg/cm² , 10.0 psi)
Minimum
At 3,000 RPM: 350kPa (3.5kg/cm² , 50.0 psi)
Minimum
*If the oil pressure is within specifications, replace the engine oil pressure switch and recheck.
*If oil pressure is NOT within specifications, inspect the oil pump..
Thats all I can give as far as input..

oil pressure is within spec. after the ~6 seconds. i donno what else to even look for anymore.

I don't know how else to help you, but I will say it's NOT normal. the ONLY time when my oil light stays on after I start the car (1-2 sec) is right after a oil change. I dump the oil in, start the engine, oil lite shuts off, check oil level, done. then I don't see the oil light til my next oil change.

Or there may be some loss of pressure somewhere in the lubrication system. I would get a factory service manual and make sure the oil pump install and measurements are within spec. There is a very slim chance the oil pump was faulty. Besides that what sort of shape is the motor in?

hello guys ...just found this old topic
ia have the exact problem on my b16a2 ( 160hp )
in the morning when i start the car oil light stays on kinda 5 seconds and then it shut off
i am using a 10w40 oil ...when the engine is hot stays just 2 seconds after start
i have a problem with my vtec for long time
it 'kicks' in and out on higher speeds , ( 1st , 2nd gear kicks perfect but 3rd and 4th kicks 'in and out' and on 5ft does not kick at all and check engine light with code 22 comes on - oil pressure switch )
...checked all ( solenoid , wiring , oil , switch ) but the oil pump no ...so maybe this is related each other ( oil pump and vtec problem ) -> not enough pressure to activate vtec how it should
can it be the oil pump old ( car have kinda 140miles ) ? or maybe the sensor bad( really i don't think so ) ?
sorry for that long and annoying post ... i can't fix my car to run how it should ( vtec ) , i can't go to a shop in this shitty country ...i have to be the mecanic
thanks in advance and waiting for answers

It sounds like a sticky pressure regulator. I don't know if it's mounted on the oil pump on a Honda but ithe regulator is on most american cars. It may be sticking partially open and bypassing the oil at first, or not closing completly at shutdown. Also have you tried changing the oil filter, and make sure you have the correct one for the car, sometimes the oil filter has a bypass in it, could be a bad or wrong filter.
i've changed the filter about 3 times ( 3 different ones , mann , denso from USA , purolator )...stilll the same
u mean the pump bypasing valve ?? ( when the oil pressure its too big , remaining pressure goes back to pan ) - maybe it's 'broken' and the oil goes much more than it should , back in the pan ?
