what will racing cams do to a vtec motor?
i am doing research on getting a b18c1 for my crx and i was wondering if i should go with an earlier model or a 94-95 with vtec. i would like to put in some cams later on down the road, but i have heard that the racing cams will stop the vtec from working. do the 92-93 b18c1 non-vtec gsr's have as much horsepower as the 94-95 vtec b18's? will the cams stop the vtec from coming on, since they are reground for a power band? any help would be appreciated. thanks.
heh - I know what you're asking
honda race engines don't use VTEC - they never go to a RPM low enough to need the low cam, so its just uneeded weight on the valvetrain. a cam from one of those cars will not work in a VTEC head. VTEC is good for street use, and you can get cams plenty agressive and still use VTEC. a VTEC valvetrain is limited to about 10,000-11,000 RPM.

GS-Rs were never NON vtec. .. . and then the b17a GSR motors were low compression longer stroke b16a's .. . .im not too impressed with them.... and yes ive driven a 92 GS-R . .. if i were you i would get a b16a in the CRX and put the 2000 dollars worth of saving into the motor and it will be alot faster

Full race motors sometimes don't use vtec because they don't care about a good balance of fuel economy and high end zing. I dunno...I haven't had any sleep cuz of midterms...so someone correct me cuz i'm probably wrong.

sorry - someone told me that the gsr motor was non-vtec pre 94. and the vtec came in in 94. i guess what i wanted to know was if i put in racing cams with the stock ecu, will there still be the variable valve timing (vtec)? i saw in another forum a while back that when the vtec cams are ground for racing or mild racing settings, the vtec lobe was ground out or something like that and not used. so, i wanted to know if the vtec would still be there if i put in some sort of cams into the b18c motor from a 94-95 gsr? now that i know there was no b18c before 94, i don't have to worry about the other part.
thank you guys for the info so far.

What kind of cams are you referring to? brand/model?
practically all VTEC cams keep VTEC, except the TODA VTEC Killers, generally speaking. Using your stock ECU as it is will hurt you... baaaaaad. You will need to get it reprogrammed probably. A VTEC controller is also going to be a necessity. You will probably have to raise your VTEC engagement and you are definatly going to have to play with your fuel curve. This is only touching the surface....
