Default HX O2 sensor

I tried searching around and could not really fine the answer that I wanted.

I think I need a new O2 sensor for my 97 Honda Civic HX (Manual) and I keep finding that they are like $300-600 for one. I know that they are a 5 wire and that seems to make a world of difference, but is there a way to wire a 4-wire one in and have it run like it would with a five wire. I know this is asking alot.

INFO:
Car is 100% stock, I bought it for MPG not HP, so I want to get back to the 44 MPG that I once got. The only thing that I can tell that makes me think it is the O2 sensor is that I am getting lower MPG. I tend to keep my cars running very well and do all the regular matainence. I noticed that my MPG's were getting bad so I checked the plugs and saw that they needed changed, I changed them out and the new ones (NGK's) are all black (after a few months) and my MPG's are down again. I chnged the wires, cap and roter, but no luck. A mechanic said the it could be the O2 sensor, but he was not 100% on that and would not want to change it unless he was sure.

If anyone knows where to get a good quality 5-wire for a decent price let me know.

I am wanting either Denso or NTK.

Thanks

why would honda issue a recall on a bad 5wire oxygen sensor.......?

without switching ECUs and loosing the fuel mileage you're stuck with the HX O2.

Don't quote me but I think that the HX O2 is the L1H1 or the L2H2 NGK sensor. They are much easier to track down.
the VX uses the L1H1 and I see it go on ebay for $85.

I'll do some checking to make sure.

But if you can post a pic of the sensor/plug or read the tiny writing along the base we can all have an answer.

most of the time, they can be had for 100-165 or so on ebay. besides tunability for turbo, this is the driving reason as to why I converted to OBD1....4wire. I still get in the 30's or so depending on how much I get on it. Hell if you are going to pay that much just for an OEM replacement, get a DIY wideband controller.
