Default OT: Type r owners, What's your opinion on the 99/00 si's

just wondering what your opinions (performance, handling) are on this car? i hear quite a bit of trash talking on this car by other owners (ie. integra owners rs, ls, gsr and civic ex owners) saying its well overrated and that its nothing but an ex other than having two cams instead of one.

I think a 99-00 GSR cost about $5k more. That's alot more money.

5K is less than $50 per mont in payments.

Si is only good for beating EX four doors!

GSR is a m uch better platform to mod, IMO. The extra displacement helps tremendously, especially if you get an ITR or Si tranny

i've driven a stock EBP one. 2000 model.

few things.

clutch is very mushy. not as agressive as the type R clutch.

the vtec band is weak.

you got like 1000 rpms of usable vtec. then you switch gear. its really funny if you redline the thing.

for a price tag of 18k new or so (my friend got it for 17000) its pretty over priced. your better off with the extra displacement a gsr can give you.

the gearing is not really bad for daily driving, but its basically still an econobox with a little more "umph" than a ex. (143 hp for ex, or was it 137 or 127...)

anyhow, i was pretty disappointed with the SI, though a guy i know likes it alot.
1000prm of usable vtec? vtec engages at 5500 the redline is 8200 how is that 1000? and the gearing is pretty much like type r's, and the price is 16,500 brand new where the hell did you get 18,000? when i bought my car the sticker price was 16,500.
these are the things that separate the si's from the ex
b16
stiffer suspenion
better front A arms
four wheel disc brake
thicker front sway bar
has a rear sway bar
lower lip
different grill
different gauge cluster and amber light up center console
pretty much all that for about 3000 more
and the horsepower rating for ex is 127 and the si is 160

when my ITR was stock, no, occaisionally i would if i was a lazy shifter, but usually no.
well if you don't fall out of vtec in your R then you shouldn't fall out of vtec in an si, maybe you were just being lazy in the si

Si is an ok car. without a vtec controller tho, evertime you redline the thing and shift it falls out of vtec. lacks torque, mushy clutch....well u get the idea

umm! the gearing of the si keeps it in the vtec powerban, it only falls about 900 rpm when i change gears in my si, and i don't have a vtec controller

My friend usually say its an "overpriced' gsr heh.. As for SI, its a fun car to drive around the city. Yes it doesn't have gobs of torque or hp, but it does have its moments If you give me a choice though, i'll go for a GSR.

I traded an 00 Civic Si in on my 01 ITR and it is night and day. The Si is a great car but is really underpowered. I added just about every bolt on possible and still did not get the performance that the ITR gives stock. It is good as a daily driver but not as a performance oriented machine.

As an ex SI owner I will tell you all that are reporting that you drop out of vtec when shifting at redline is really based on your driving. If you think that the SI will act like the ITR when shifting your all wrong. It might have the same gearing and all but no where does it drop out of vtec when I shifted on that thing. Yes its an upgraded EX and the bitch sucked on braking since it had no ******* abs system and for the price it wasn't that bad at all. They were selling EX's for more than 16k almost and I got the SI for 175xx. It's a great commuter car and the EBP color complimented the looks of the car. It was the bang for the buck for under 20k and I think it still is. Now I have an ITR. People can say that it is an expensive GSR but it wasn't really that much more for the stuff that you get.

I give the SI to the GSR's

I have driven a few Si's....I wanted one in high school, glad I bought a GSR. Every one thought the Si, was some thing special when it first came out, what they didn't all realize is that Honda had made a similar priced car which would smoke Si's for the past five years(GSR)....
I have always heared from a lot of people that the B16 has a lot of potential, but as for me I don't see it.
If you get an Si just be sure to get one with Altezza's and a fart cannon....this way you can blend in with other Si owners.
Sorry, but around here that is the reputation that has been earned for the Si.

The reason why I got the ITR instead of keeping the SI. Too many idiot people out there drivng the SI and some people get the blame for their stupidity by having their cars keyed TWICE because they might have thought it was my car that did it. At least I didnt bother to drop a turbo when I had planned on it when I first got it. It would have been a waste of my money.

hey fuzz, as an owner of 2 si's, (one my red civic you have seen, the other a DEAD stock 99 si) and a itr enthusiast i can honestly say it is an excellent platform to start with. not quite as potent as the itr stock, but a good platform nonetheless. sure, the clutch is a tad weak, it is in dire need of a gear and a lsd, and the suspension needs some firming up and it needs a larger rear bar but IMHO much better to start out with than say a 92-95 civic (stock for stock, engine swaps excluded) it's not that slow.....if you want to race, and have some spare money you don't mind losing, let me know, i'll meet you at an autocross....
