just wondering, what fuel is recomended for a d16y8 with i/h/e? i know for a stock y8 the manual recomends 87, but what about basic bolt on modifications?

np, me too sometimes when i really needed answer

 

go to a name brand gas station and get mid-grade gas and you will see a difference. premium gas might give you slightly better performance, but for the price difference between mid-grade and premium i would stick to mid-grade.

 

the way gas is i wouldnt get anything higher than 87 unless u boost

Increased octane will not give you increased performance. The octane number is a rating for resistance to ignition. You need higher octane when running boost or high compression to prevent detonation. For a Y8 with bolt ons, there is no reason for anything other than regular.

will going back to 87 from 89 or 91 after a few tanks damage anything?

I think you may be confused about what octane and octane ratings are. You won't hurt anything by switching fuel grades as long as you run the minimum octane required for your car.

Getting a higher octane than what is recommended is just a waste of money. There are no performance gains to be had, and really no benefit at all.

 

I tried running every octane from 87, 89, to 93 when I had my Civic Ex and I didn't notice a difference between them at all except for a lighter wallet. Stick with 87 octane.

you will see ABSOLUTELY no gain from a higher octane fuel. even on a turbo, sc, or NOS application. higher octane does not mean higher horsepower. higher octane should only be used on high compression and forced induction to prevent detonation. but nothing will be felt.

 

i know exactly what you are thinking.

i've got a delsol SI too and im thinking well if the VTEC needs 93 and the S needs 87... even though the SI says it should use 87 (reg) Maybe i should used 89. Nope drove with 89 for 2 months (i have I/E) and then switched to 87 and i've notice better fuel economy with 87 as well as a less rich smell in the exhaust.

So if you arent boosting/N2O'n and have 1 cam stick with 87.

OMG... ist only like 1 dollar more for a full tank when you jump from grades like that. you must have some weak arms.

 

Althought I have heard that Premium gas ( 91 octane) apparently gets better gas mileage because it is able to burn slower. Can someone tell us if this could be true?

If it burned slower it would be worse because no matter how fast the fuel is going to burn you injectors are still going to shoot in the similar amount of fuel you'd have it you would use 87. So now your 02 sensor is detecting fuel in your exhaust and tells the car to ease up on the gas. So now when you punch the gas you are having less fuel per air ratio and flooring it lean, while at the same time at idle you are running a lil rich. A setup that is completely opposite of optimal.

Please I could be very wrong, so correct me = ]

thats what i heard to....but my y7 was detonating and its pretty much stock. The bottom end didnt look too pretty when i pulled the head off while doing a mini me.

 

Unless you have a reason for premium stick with the cheap stuff.
With ethanol.

From everything I've done with engine design, and all I've gathered over the years about these sorts of things (I have a BS in Automotive engineering and worked in the industry for a few years) there is absolutely no way theoretically that you will get better milage with higher octane. If somone can prove me wrong, and show me the data, I would glady go back on my remarks. I have yet to see any real proof of this.

High octane has a higher flash point, which means it's less likely to detonate prematurely in high compression or turbocharged engines. That's it. It does not improve performance, give better milage or give your engine a 'treat' by filling up with it once and a while.
