Harm to h22a engine without O2 sensor?
Summary: Can I drive safely (in other words, not harm my engine) without an O2 sensor?
I just did a h22a swap and got the engine running. I got a check engine light, but I haven't pulled the code because it was rather late and I didn't want to anger the neighbors testing a car open header. So I got a couple questions about where I am at.
I didn't get a down pipe with my h22a engine so I can't really hook up the O2 sensor. I have been waiting for an RMF header for some time now and I dunno when I will get it. I was wondering if there is any harm done in driving my car without the O2 sensor. I don't think I will drive it too much, but I want to make sure my clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate work properly ASAP because I REALLY need to get my car on the road soon because I can't really take off from work much more since the swap and such has left me rather financially drained (i am only able to car pool with someone once or twice a week because they don't always drive to that area). Now I did search, I didn't find much about how safe it is for the engine other than that people say the O2 sensor mostly works at idle and non-WOT. Anything else I should now about running with no O2 sensor?

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by BB6racer »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">your engine should be fine. if your o2 sensor goes bad, or come off, the ecu will run in "safe mode". you will just run really rich. at least that's what i've heard...</TD></TR></TABLE>
That sounds like it makes sense, which probably explains way WOT doesn't really change since its running rich. Thanks for the reply!
Anyone else confirm this?
