Default Final drive = diff gear ratio?

I know, my ignorance is showing through here, but it's a valid (I think) question.

Is the "final drive" (4.266, in my case) the same as the diff. ratio?

Thanks for feeding my brain!

Im not one to answer your question although I have heard alot about swapping out the final drive gear for a smaller? gear, thus lowering the top speep but you would get there faster.
Is there another post that gets into this sort of thing?
Where would one shop for a final drive gear?

the final drive is bolted onto the diff. with a "shorter" final drive gear your revs will drop less between shifts, and your revs will also climb much faster to redline. but yes, you will lose top speed.

with a shorter final drive the "drop" would remain the same since the individual gear ratios would be the same. the revs will also be higher for a given speed, depending on the final drive ratio, and you will get better acceleration.

top speed is irrelevant since no one really hits top speed anyway. the only place where it would hurt you on a regular basis is in land speed racing, which none of us do.

diff ratio is a term that i never use to describe a FD, but it could very well be the same thing.

there are custom final drives available for h22 trannies, just be prepared to drop $1200 bucks + install for one.

Thanks! The reason I was wondering is that most speed calculators out there want a "diff ratio" as well as the gear ratios...wanted to make sure I was using the proper number.
