Default Tranny problem...clutch?

i have a 97 civic ex. theres only about 72k miles on the y8 engine and tranny. ive got a short ram intake, 2.25" custom cat back exhaust, and a b&m short shifter, performance wise. i dont know if that info will help or whatever. anywho...2 days ago i was @ a party and a couple kids wanted to race. so i drove in my friends car and my friend (who i taught how to drive stick and can drive it pretty well) drove mine. everything goes down and then we go back to the party to chill. i go to leave and from 1st to 2nd is fine but when i was in 2nd it popped out and started grinding. i took it home and went out the next day n it did it again, but every other gear is fine. it only does it in 2nd. the strange thing to me is that it only happens in low rpms. if i redline 1st and shift (not slam) it into 2nd its fine. could it be the clutch? i dont think its the pressure plate. h-t please help me out!

cliff notes: 2nd gear is messed up. @ low rpms ( <4k rpms) it pops out and grinds but @ higher rpms ( >4500rpms) its fine. it only happens in 2nd gear. all the others are fine. clutch?

thanks in advance...

Racing around with a short shifter is very hard on your transmission. Check your linkage for loose bolts and/or snags and change the transmission fluid.

i wasnt racing that night. my car was just the "taxi" to get people who wanted to watch it race to and from. btw it was an 03 rsx type s vs. an ls powered hatch. but anyway some other people told me to check the tranny fluid.

Drain your fluid and fill with fresh Pennzoil Synchromesh or Honda MTF. Check if that helps out any. Might take a little while to notice a difference, if any.

You might want to do with Archidictus said also, crawl under your car and check for shifter linkage binding.

BTW, have you checked the condition of your shifter linkage bushings?
