Default good subs without enclosure

im looking to mount some subs in the rear of my CRX, but i dont want to put them in an enclosure. im thinking of mounting them in the divider between the passenger compartment and trunk area, facing the front. what are good subs that do not need an enclosure, and are they comparable to enclosed subs?

thanks

There really are no "subs" the will work without a cabinet, somebody will jump on hear and tell you to get some "free air" subs, but they are just subs that will work in very large "cabinets", [like the trunk of a car] that do not have a perfect seal, although you still have to have two "chambers" a trunk, [not a hatch] and a pass. compartment, and you still have to mount the subs to a "baffle" that helps isolate the two "chambers"

Why do you not want to use a box? 94

There are some guys having very good results with small subs... I'd bet you could get some decent sub bass out of a pair of 8's in a fairly small enclosure.

FCM could probably give you some advice on brands and how small the enclosure could be.

things have changed significantly, there are some subs that are made to work well in small enclosures - some of the JL and rockford lines specifically are stated as such - around 0.8cu ft sealed.

there are some good 8" subs out there, specifically the 8w7 by jl. also if you want a decent amount of bass for the size, i recommend the infinity basslink.

I guess you can try an aperiodic membrane setup if you are picky on space.

i was looking through the jlaudio website, and what do you think about one 10w6 in the trunk? ill make a box about the height of the rear divider, and make up for volume outwards. does the 10w6 require a big amp to push it?

Although the 10W6v2 is a very good speaker, and installed in a proper box would give you a ton of bass in your CRX if driven by an amp that puts out 400 watts RMS into a 2 ohm load, it is not the sub I would use if I was trying the save some space, the .5 to 1.0 cu ft box that it needs for a sealed enclosure and the size of the sub itself, [ almost 7" mounting depth, the 6W0 is 3.5" and the 8W0 is a tiny tad over 4"] makes for a box that is going to take up some space 94

That is what I would use, 2x8s, in a properly built box they should sound great, or if you still want to save room, take a look at the 8W3v2 125 watt same air space .30-.50, mounting depth is a little deeper 4.31" as opposed to the W0s 4.063" and only use one, or two if you want it louder, and then there is the 8W7 300 watt, bigger box though .875 and mounting depth is almost 7", you would only need one 94
