Good First Bike? Just read on a little....
I'm new to this forum and have read the FAQ and its advice in getting an older bike and whatnot. Yes, I am really young and have been doing a lot of reading on bikes but Im not sure yet if i am going to pull throughon this. I have been around motocross for years but stopped about 2 years ago cause of cars, school, and soccer. I sold my fully built KX80 to get some extra cash last year. I would only ride the bike with my dad and never by myself. My dad has had many harley's over the years and just purchased a new one a few weeks ago. We would just ride around the area every once in a while on about 80 mile trips. Anyways, im not new to riding, but new into "bigger bikes". I was thinking like a mid to late 90's CBR 600 or something. I dont want to go any bigger than a 600. My aunt has a car shop and kids are always trading bikes for cars so i can get a bike really cheap. Not planning on modding the bike (that's what the car is for), and not gonna be experimenting with speed or stunts, cause I have read and heard stories on here and in the news. Like I said, i would only ride with my dad and never head around town by myself. Would a mid to late 90's CBR be wayyy to much? I have heard that the YZFR6 is a good beginner bike. I already have some saftly equipment laying around and intend on investing in more. Sorry for the long post and i am a noob to this section, so good advice is welcomed, thanks
this thread can be locked, i was just looking for a little more info. I felt that i would ask the people in this thread who have been in this situation before. I understand how many posts like this that people like you guys have have read like this over the years, but ill just continue to search on my own.

As in.. is a 600 too much? I don't think a 600 is too much for a lot of people. Then again, for a lot of people, it's way too much.
Learn to crawl before you walk. Riding a small capacity dirt bike, unless you're competitively racing, you probably won't be ready for the power of a 600 street bike. It's pretty brutal for the most people and 98% of us will probably never be able to reach the full potential that it has to offer.
Take your MSF course. Get your license. Use your gear. Ride like everyone wants to kill you. And rack on as many miles as humanly possible.
As for a good starter bike, it's really on how you handle the throttle, if you're careful and precise, you should be able to start on a 600. If you're hamfisted on the twist grip, maybe a 250 would be better and more forgiving. SV650's are a real popular choice for beginners as well as mature riders because they're sporty, relatively comfortable, and has enough power to ride anywhere.

a few days ago, i got to ride a 2002 gixxer 600, but i never went over 30 mph. Im used to high performance motorcross bikes, but these are sooo much different and it is a whole different style of riding and power and i know the two dont compare. but thanks for the advice
Heh, I started out today in 1st gear my first time ever on a bike! Let the clutch out and rolled around with my feet stuck out going about 5mph trying not to tip over.
Was an immaculate first ride! All 300 feet of it.

If you only plan to ride once in awhile and don't plan on getting into the performance aspect of motorcycles, how about a nice Bandit 400 or something like that? Still nice to look at,decent power (especially for you),and cheap on insurance. You should consider a Bandit,GS 500,EX 500/250,maybe even a Katana. But you really should not start on a late 90's sportbike. Please wear ALL your gear and don't let us hear any stories about liking the wind through your hair.

the two should be very comparable... they are more simular than different. If you are "Used to" a fast MX bike you should be able to make the transition very easily. it is another thing learning survival skills for the road though, that takes time and experience. Just start slow, and learn at your own rate... if you see someone else doing something on a bike that you "Think" you can do, Don't.
Peace
