Anyone experienced theft in the paddock?
Some times one just has to leave expensive parts or equipment unattended in the paddock. Now I know the trustworthiness of this crowd is beyond reproach, but miscreants could still violate the sanctity of the paddock and take something that is not theirs. Has anyone experienced this or knows anyone that has? I know the odds are extremely low, but is it pretty much inevitable?
I've yet to have it happen, but gessss if I ever see anyone doing that chit...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only at an autocross that was in an urban area, years ago. It was at a coliseum parking lot and there was some sort of carnival thing going on in the adjacent parking lot. Lots of foot traffic. All I lost was an air compressor - nobody wanted any busted GS-R stuff apparently.
Never seen it happen, and hope I never do. Everybody there has something to lose.. If you can't trust your fellow racers in the paddock, then you can't trust them on the track.
There WERE some random spectators at the VIR event in December, but I honestly think they were there because they really wanted to be. I was more worried about keeping my stuff dry, if anything.

Nah there were definitely some Danville locals that noticed the action at the Innkeeper and visited VIR to see some real performance cars. They were cool though.

A few years ago, Road Atlanta had a string of wallets dissapear, but never have I seen anything leave a track event
Can't get much more politically incorrect than that.

Generally, it takes money to participate in this kind of activity. So you could assume that those that are participating have more than 2 nickels to rub together and don't fit the description of thieves.
I have never had any problems with anything getting stolen at a track. I have lost my stopwatch, but I'm positive I just forgot who borrowed it last time.
Never had anything stolen at an autocross either, but my valuable stuff was generally locked in a trailer box.

No worries from me at any track event so far. Just too many people walking around / close to the cars for a idiot to grab something.
Soprano style..
Hey... TONY... ready for the beat-down?

Drag races... = yes... lock your chit up.

Hey hey hey I'm not saying fellow enthusiasts do the stealing!
It's not impossible for some hoodlum to wander into the paddock, that's what I meant by miscreants.

I thought someone "forgot to put back" my snap-on stubby phillips...
I got it back more than 6 months later.. when the "borrower" came by to have me help him work on his car!

So tell me, you want it in the head? Or the Chest?
Hah - that question would never be asked in real life. Besides, getting shot in the face/mouth is about the most dishonarable way to die, no one would ever choose that route!!

If anyone were to try to steal something at one of these events, they'd better damned well get away. If they got caught... let's just say it'd better not be one of "us"
People constantly go in and out of each others tool boxes, but nothing, in my experience ever gets stolen. Trust is paramount for a mulitude of reasons at something like this.
That said, I might be forced to walk off with some "hyper white reverse lights" before the weekend is over.

totally agreed...but that's why i leave my video camera going when i'm not in or near my car in the paddock!
sounds like we have a linch mob for anyone jacking chit at VIR. wouldn't be a bad idea if we keep an eye on each other chit!!
I think the only time equipment is really at risk at race events is if you're drag racing.
Never heard of anything getting intentionally stolen @ road races. Now, once in a while someone may end up with someone else's tools, but that's about it.

Mental Note - Take camera along with the folding chair and plastic blocks that spell "BAD".
Ad is still interesting although the loss of the "B" severely limits the endless possibilities you had with all 3 letters.
And for the record - You only get **** stolen if you are autocrossing in the ghetto. Don't think the gangstas don't know the routine. Rimz are the big ticket item and they don't even have to jack your car to get them there.
The thiefs aren't going to ride out to a controlled facility such as VIR just to try and find something to steal.
