So, I have this set of Crower cams (63401) that no one wants to buy because of all the conspiracy theory going around about possible cam breakage. What I'm wondering is how do you all think they would do in a turbo set up? I have done a search, but I haven't seen any concrete (re:dyno) data supporting low duration over high duration or vice versa. What has stirred my interest is actualy based on DSM/Toyota tech. HKS sells cams for the 4G63, 3SGTE, and 2JZGTE. All have pretty wild durations...

Yes, my Crower's have more lift, but how can a DSM get a way with 264-272 degrees of duration? Everyone "says" long duration is bad, but is it really? Anyone care to shed some light on the topic? Guess I'll find out how they work when I go to dyno. That is unless someone wants to buy them

 

I wouldnt use the cam. GSR cams can make all the power you'll ever want (600+hp) or need. Plus, Crower cams do break. I've seen it and experienced it, first hand.

Well, personally, I'm not too worried about the whole cam breakage situation. Not that it wouldn't totally **** me off if I did lose an entire engine. But, that's why I have a spare engine or two for both of my cars I'm not looking for anywhere near 600hp, probably around 300-350whp (mildly built LS/VTEC). In addition to getting my desired peak hp, I want as much under the curve as possible.

 

stock cams are best, GSR the best of stock from what Ive been told......

From what I understand, it isn't the duration you want to avoid so much as it is overlap. Obviously when the duration of the cams are increased, the window for overlap also increases. I'm not saying that I think those cams would work, but I guess it is hard to say so until you tryit out.

Whoever is saying Crower cams suck, which cams are you speaking of? A while ago, they released a letter saying that they changed the way their cams are manufactured. They should not break anymore, and anyone who has had any problems will have their's replaced.

Mine have given me no problems....granted they're not extremely "hot" cams, but still. Crower is supposed to be one of the best, and they're not regrinds like many others are.

I'll try to find that letter from Crower and post it up.

 

See if you can get the profiles of when the intake valves open. You can get away with larger duration cams but generally the intake valve will open later than an aggressive all motor cam. I learned a lot messing around with older Mustang SVO's and there are a million write ups on this. Try checking out some older issues or Mustangs and Fast Fords if you have the oppertunity. There was a nice article a month or two ago on this and it explained all the benifits.

BTW I know this is the last mag you ever thought you would be reading but its useful info

 

lobe separation is what causes the overlap problems on High duration cams.

 

if youre running turbo... stick to stock cams. the only time i would consider changin my cams is if im goin all motor. crower makes good cams... but why buy em? you dont need em...

 

Yeah... find that letter if u can so I can show my sister that her crowers in her Gsr will be fine. And just in case something does happen, I'd like to see something in writing saying that they would replace it. She's a lil' nervous cuz' of all this talk on Crower cams breaking on every1. I'm not sweating it though cuz' I got a couple buddies running crower with no prob.

 

For reference, I already have these cams in my possesion. I was using them when I was n/a. Well, I still am n/a, but my f/i set-up is almost complete. The numbers I quoted before were advertised numbers. Here's the rest of the specs at .050" tappet lift:

Still seem too agressive? Maybe if I used only the Crower IN/EX with a stock GS-R IN/EX cam. Guess I'll be reading some Mustang articles. Actually, my next project (farther in the future) was going to be a '67 Shelby GT 500. (I'm a fan of Gone in 60 Seconds. And yes I know there was only one real GT 500 in the whole movie )


I'd also be interested in seeing that letter from Crower as well. I know I have cams from their second batch, if that means anything.
