I found the rating of 16mpg in the city and 31mpg on the highway. I'm currently tossing around the idea of trading my car for either a SI coupe, the newer EP03 Si or maybe a EX or HX 99-00 Coupe. Fuel economy is a concern seeing its now 2.35 for reg here and 2.55 for premium. I'd doubt we will be seeing 1.9ish again now.

Any way, while obvioulsy the HXs will get the best mileage, I've yet to see any for sale, and I fear they are slower then a retarded snail. Any suggestions? I like the looks of the Civic Coupe Si the best, but it seems to get horrid fuel economy, be priced very close to the much newer Si and requires premium fuel, all the while putting out the same power. I currently drive a auto 2.slow Golf and average 23mpg sprited city/rural driving. Highway crusing for the 2.0 is 23mpg as well, needs to rev to hard and sounds like it wants to die at 70mph. (115hp 122trq)

i have a jdm b16a sir2 in my eh2

i get about 21-25mpg in city
not too bad it sees redline at least 2 to 3 times a day

shouldnt hte ep3 require premium fuel too?

if you still want to be fast and good in gas
get any civic EX and boost it people still get 30mpg around city after tuned

If I could pick any civic it would be the 99-00 SI coupe.

 

Everything I've read has said hte K20 runs on regular while the K20A (rsx-s, ctr) uses premium because its basicly the same engine only built for high compresion.

I could be wrong.

The estimate I have for the 00 Si is from ConsumerGuide.com. They have been known to make mistakes.

im pretty sure the em1 gets about 25mpg
my friend owns one he gets about 250-300miles per tank in city

700 miles a week / 25 x $2.50 a gallon = $70

Golf
700 miles a week / 23 x $2.30 a gallon = $70

Fuel consumption between Honda's shouldn't be too big of a decision maker... If you want the SI, get it. Unless you plan on staying SOHC for the cars life, get the DOHC.

It all depends on how you drive it. If you want to conserve gas, then don't rev the **** out of it and shift at lower rpms. It's nice to have the power handy if you need it though...

 

Its just either I get the Si and then I'm pissed off about paying 20cents more a gallon or I get an EX and I'm pissed that my car is slow and SOHC... I really don't want another SOHC, I miss my dohc (VWs are SOHC 8V )

Is 10k roughly a good price on a Si with ~90k miles? I'm looking to trade the Golf and thus Dealers are the name of the game. Several large ones around here (100 miles) have a few Si. All are around 80k miles for $10k. I figure a Honda dealer may also be a bit more trust worthy then a 16 year old kid or some guy. (Not good experience with private sales).

Lastly, buildig up a EX to be fast would simply not be cost effective, any fuel savings would be lost in all the CAIs, Suspension and turbo stuff.

 

IF gas mileage is what you want, then get a used VW Jetta or Golf TDI. They are not exactly slugs but u cant rev them past 4500 rpm I think.

A bit too hard to find and reliability and parts cost are a big concern.

 

damn...i thought my SI was eating up gas when i was getting about 270miles per tank but I guess its normal.

How the hell do you drive 700 miles a week??...thats krazy man...get a hybrid, I usually only put gas in once every 3 weeks

 

Get the EX and throw in an LS motor with the LS tranny. It'll give you just as much fuel economy as the stock motor, but with much more tq and a little more hp.

 

Reliability? Those cars run like Mbenz diesels... Forever. Better yet find a mid 90's Mbenz diesel. Gas mileage and some bling

 

when i had my si it got about 260-290 a tank with mostly highway commute miles. i had to fill up every other day which is about 250 miles with just under a quarter tank left on each fill up. they get terrible gas mileage for a civic. as a matter of fact i compared my si to my 5.0 with 2.73 final drive. they were about equal on fuel consumption. so if gas mileage is a concern stay away from an si.

 

si's are bad on the highway due to the short 5th gear. you're at 4krpm at 70mph

Those numbers on the gas mileage you got are totaly wrong.

 

yeah i get good gas mileage usually around 300-330 miles per tank, depending if i drive like an idiot or not. lol.

 

I drive an EM1 and those numbers are wrong. I get great gas mileage in the city. On the freeway, I don't get as good gas mileage but that's due to a short 5th gear. I'm not sure on my numbers since I haven't calculated it yet, but I know for sure those numbers are wrong.

 

Uh, I appreciate the gasmileage numbers, but telling me how much a tank of gas gets is really worthless. I get 315 now and my buddy gets 280. I have a 14 gallon tank, he has roughly a 17 gallon tank.

Also, doing an engine swap is kinda self defeating, seeing it would cost money to do so and that would negate whatever possible savings.

 

Damn, I was thinking about replacing my driver car with a 99-00 Si but those numbers are horrible. I've got an 01 Galant V6 (yes, my other car IS a Civic) and it gets 25mpg, which is a mix of highway and stoplight driving. Hmmm, gonna be hard to give up the V6 torque for something that gets the same or worse mpg.

You could always toss in an LS 5th gear though, and bump those highway numbers up a bit...

 

Ah, but I'm sure the Si is much funner then a Gallant.
