Default just bought an 03 civic ex

Couple things. First off, it has what looks like 2000 si wheels on it. not complaining. also the person that owned it before me put a type r badge on the back. so i have to order a new badge from the local dealership.

I am wanting to go ahead and do the suspension first. I like the wheels and don't think i am going to do anything with them in the near future. i think about a 2 inch drop would suffice. I have heard that if you just do the springs it will wreak havoc on the factory shocks, true?

I am wanting to see about getting a rear fender that will allow a little more ground clearance for whatever exhaust i choose to get. I never liked the rear end on the 03 and i think that is the reason why. The OE bumper doesn't allow for an aftermarket exhaust.

Also, even though this is a sohc vtec and right now i am more than happy with the top end, I hate how long it takes to get there. Any advice on how to solve that without breaking the bank?

First post so be nice.

Thanks.

if you want to lower your ride, save up your money and get some true coilovers, like tein or progress. if you just throw some springs on it they'll destroy your shocks. it happened to me costly mistake

Yeah don't just do spings, whole coilover will be more costly but they will give you a better ride and handalin in my opinion. Tein, Mugen, Buddy Club, Progress. All good.

thanks for the suggestions. switching gears. i talked to a mechanic at my local honda dealership, he said that until the warrenty runs out he wouldn't mess with the suspension. it will void the warrenty. I asked him what i could do without voiding the warrenty, he said exhaust, and intake. So, I guess I am going to start working on finding a good cold air intake. I heard they help with gas mileage which i am sure we could all use help on.

Does anyone have advice on intakes? I plan on doing a full exhaust too. I need to keep the $ to a minimum but i still need something that is reliable. I have heard that apex-i and skunk are really great brands but I don't think I can afford all that.

Thanks again.

If you are penny pinching, don't bother dropping alot on the intake. All CAI are essentially the same. Ebay it, and make sure the filter is good. You can pick up an air filter for CAI at autozone or something.

I don't think that buying a really expensive intake will help much more than an ebay one.

yea ebay has them pretty cheap. essentially it is just a pipe and a filter. the one i am looking at is like $32 shipped. i can deal with that. does anyone know where i can find some pictures of si wheels that have been painted? like gunmetal? i am thinking about doing that but i want to make sure it looks good before i try it.

nope the only budget swap would be a k20a3.
b series is close to impossible and would cost more than a jdm k20a swap.

AaronXirisH, the d17 powerplant isnt too great for power mods from intake, header, exhaust. many members @ http://www.7thgencivic.com and i myself have gone thru every bolt on in the book and i can tell ya that i have only notice an max improvement of 5-7hp -+ on my auto and thats at the high end as my low end was loss. i have short ram intake, hi flow cat, apexi catback and grounding kit. intake alone will yield a very small gain of high end power as your low end is sacraficed. i highly suggest to reconsider and think before cashing yourself out as your on a budget.

as for just dropping on springs, ride comfort will be harsh eventually as the shocks arent so strong. driving on blown shocks can be very dangerous as well.

i seen the si rims powdercoated gunmetal, didnt look too good. i think they look sex with the clear coat still on them.

as for rear fender, what do you mean? bumper? if so, the 03 rear bumper is perfect for any aftermakret exhaust. my apexi fits fine WITH the OEM lip kit on the rear...

I don't see why he would have to have a coil over set up. a properly matched Strut/spring combo would do just fine. i see people buying coil overs and for what? just to say they have them? The whole purpose to having coil overs is to adjust and tune your suspension for various tracks. If this guy did decide to spend money on a real coil over system, and if he decided, there would be some SCCA events he could not participate, some of these are at the beginner level.

My vote; get a set of tokico Illuminas or adjustable valve struts, and some custom rate ground control springs, or if there is an application for your model, an H&R cup kit.

jtteg_x, i am starting to find out that the d17 isn't all that. Is this k20a swap something i should look into down the road? i have family that works for my local honda dealer so i can get wholesale parts, or used stuff pretty easily. I don't think it would take much to pull this engine out.

as far as suspension goes. I am going for looks and some stability. I am coming from a 97 altima that had the softest suspension ever, so the suspension that i have now feels real tight. I found a guy that would cut the springs with a zizz wheel. am i still looking at blowing the shocks if i do that?

as far as the bumper, yes that is what i am talking about. I hate seeing people that have my type of car that have those huge canister mufflers on the back. i don't want it looking like it doesn't fit. maybe kids i just haven't seen someone do it right yet. do you have pics of your set up?

thanks.

alright so, i had my car checked out to make sure everything was copeasetic. turns out that whatever suspension the kid on it before i bought it blew out the shocks. Thank god he put back on the stock suspension because i am getting them replaced under warrenty. should be getting that done this week sometime. Will order my intake in the next 2 weeks. I have been asking around about the k20 that everyone is raving about. Sounds like it would be pretty solid. I am going to think about it a little more. has anyone done this swap yet? (d17 to a k20)
