Default does a bigger valve leash make more noise?

i used the reccommended 8,9 valve leash on my buddy club cam install. when i start the car cold, i hear this weird sound for an instant, then it goes away. it sounds like the engine is running without oil for that instant. is this noise a direct result of the bigger valve leash?

Did you change valve springs too?

You will get a bit more noise from looser valvelash, you may want to consider running a good 10w40 also depending on how you drive your car.

It's cold start clatter, not from your valve lash. In regards to tightening it up just to quiet a motor down....you'll never hear one burning either. I'll happily deal with the ticking, as if you can hear it over the intake and exhaust noise anyway. Which set of BC's are you running on ITR springs?

i'm using bc3+ cams with the itr valvetrain at stock rev limit. the sound is most audible when the engine is cold, its not present when starting with a hot engine. the thing is i didnt hear this sound at all before i swapped cams

I had the same problem with my B16A...clatter at start up in the mornings. Switched to genuine Honda oil filters and the problem disappeared. I guess the Anti-Drainback valve really works in these filters.

now i'm beginning to think it could be more than just valve clatter, maybe i have a spun bearing? the engine sounds like its running without oil for a second when you first start it, how do i diagnose this?

If you've spun a bearing, the motor would be locked up.

Are you running an oil cooler or remote oil filter?

If so, the oil could be running back into the pan from the lines when the car is shut off. If not, its just valve ticking. If it was a weak bearing, it would make the sound all the time.

i'm using the stock oil system, seen too many guys have problems when running oil coolers or remote setups. could the noise be rod knock? are my symptoms consistent with this?

No. You will hear a rod knock consistantly with engine rpm's.

If you used the recommended valve lash, and did a good job, everything is fine. I think you're freaking out about nothing. Honda motors are always a little chattery. My gsr used to do the same thing. If something serious was wrong with the car (spun bearing) the symptoms would be a lot worse, trust me.
