Default Transmission problem (not honda, 91 explorer 4 speed manual)

Ok this is a question for my sister, she is getting ready to sell her explorer but the other day it had a few problems. I need some diagnostic advice from you guys. The other day it was fine then it started being hard to shift into first and second. You could do it but it was hard. Then yesterday it wouldn't come out of first. I went and looked at it a minute ago and found the following. When the car is off it will shift into all gears with the clutch in fine. Start it up and push in the clutch it will still shift into gears fine and will go forward or reverse with no problems. Let up the clutch and it makes a banging noise under the car and push the clutch back in and it is hard to put into any gear. You have to jam it in but it doesn't grind. What could this be: clutch? flywheel? fluid? transmission? clutch cable?
