weekend autox setup?
i have a 92 4dr eg... i'm thinking hard about autox'ing but not competively in H stock, just once a month or so... it's sitting on 00-si wheels and when i get suspension i will be getting some 205-50-15 tires that will be used for autox'ing and street use, prolly the new dunlop dunlop direzza. im on a budget otherwise i would have two sets of wheels.
anyways, about the suspension. i know everyone recommends koni/gc. at first i was gonna get omni full ,but after seeing the supsension dyno, i have started looking elsewhere. first off, for a weekend auto-x'er and a highschooler on a budget is the koni/gc more than i need? what would be a cheaper, yet good alternative. i've done some research, i just would like some responses from ppl with experience. remember , im not going to be too competitive. it's just for fun.

Spend the money on decent tires (195/60/14 falkens and steelies are cheap) and seat time then

And stay stock; dont go modding yet. I did suspension that put me into STS which I can't afford to have my car fully prepped / competitive for with my student loans. Just go out and have fun for now.

stock is the "cheapest" option in alot of ways but if you're set on doing something to the car then Koni/GC's are at least a step in the right direction. Spring rates are somewhat subjective but generally most people run higher rates in the rear along with a larger (22mm+) sway bar. As others have said, Azenis are a good tire and are cheap.

The question I should have asked, and since no one else has, have you participated in an autocross before? If not, sign up for one and go enjoy driving, meet some people and ask some questions. The vast majority of autocrossers will be more than willing to help and talk to you about your car.
Making changes to your car will throw you into a different class. If you just want to have fun, go for it. Being competitive will require studying the rules to build for class you desire to run with.

I wanted to make sure it was clear to the original poster that if he wanted to STAY in HS, he should just do shocks, and R compound tires if he wants.
As a highschooler, I'm guessing his budget will prevent being competitive in STS, really his best bet is HS.

thanks guys, i read some auto-x manuals. i wasnt really sure on what was stipulations for h-stock were... so i can only change the shock itself and tires?
Those are the biggest changes allowed in Stock. Cat back, air filter, brake pads, etc can be changed, but don't make a big difference anyway, compared to tires.
My best advice is to go run an event before making any changes to the car. You can have plenty of fun (and maybe be fairly competitive) in HS on street tires. What you will learn about driving at the first few events (first few years even) makes a much bigger difference than anything you can change on the car.

Keep it stock, if you can go fast on a stock car with crappy tires then you are going somewhere.
Have fun... most autox people are very helpful. Go on ridealongs, have others drive your car while you sit shotgun. 20 events at $20 an event will make you go faster than a 400 dollar shock purchase.

If you are not planning to be competitive and if the little money you do have burns through your pockets (as it does for me), start with tires and as much seat time as possible. I doubt you would be willing to go back to stock tires so do not worry about what class you are in, just have fun. Do a lot of research before you buy anything' you will hear this allot and I know from experience that if you rush into buying something because it’s cheap you will just end up replacing it later. Since your wheels put you in sts I say have fun in that class, learn to drive your car and save your money for quality parts. To answer your original question my advise would be to stay as stock as possible for as long as possible, but if you just cannot wait there are a lot of great deal on springs and coilovers in the Road Racing/Autocross - Racing Springs FS/WTB/WTT Thread. Do not go too extreme on the spring rate, you shocks will not be able to handle it, if you buy shocks first get the best you can possible afford. (koni sports, Tokico illuminas) I have raced on the tokicos blues but I did end replacing them... Have Fun

Yeah, I ran on the crappy stock Firestone peices of junk, that came on my car, for the first season that I did events with it.

Stick with your SI's do not worry about the 13's and definetly do not buy any tires for the 13's. Just run in a novice class, I seriously doubt anyone is going to make a big deal about your rims, you can ask when you go through tech or register if they want you to run in sts. Depend on the club, this past weekend there was a four door civic killing everyone in novice because he happen to have a supercharger.
thanks guys, either way i have i crappy tires on both sets of wheels. the si's have stock firestones with that are 185-65-15 , then i have the steelies with random brands of all weathers.

I did my first few events on the stock xgt v4 craptastic tires my gsr came with. Needed something close to 45 psi to stay off the sidewalls. Great fun, great learning experience, even spun out once.

When I had my H stock Prelude S (see my avatar), I didn't mod my car at all because it would have bumped me out of stock. I raced for two years and became a better driver, and at the end of it all I was glad I'd spent that money on races instead of suspension. So, autox may have actually saved me money. Lol.
Actually, I did buy a set of road wheels and used my stock steelies with Falken Azenis for racing. That made me faster.
Too bad they aren't available for 13s.
