Just saw something very cool during a NASCAR race
Watching the Nextel cup race at Infineon right now on Speed. Gordon, leading, was catching some lap cars. He caught a guy in 3 and the guy gave him the line. The camera follows the 24 car as it leaves the corner and out pops Jeff Gordon's hand with the "thanks for the clean pass" wave.
I love seeing stuff like that. I'm a big fan of the wave during a race, lets you know I'm not pissed at you. I love receiving it when I let people by or am passed too. It's one of those "gentleman racer" things that I think are pretty important. Good to see it at the level that's on TV right now.

Sorry If I made you upset by my comment
well, not really. I think Nascar is the most rediculous racing series. The only reason anyone watches Nascar is for the accidents. The only reason I watch it is because its whats on Speed channel 95% of the time and I hope to catch a glimpse of something....of what the old SpeedVision would've had in their programming...oh, well, you can't have everything. You get Nascar, I get Nopi Pooter vision.
Last time I checked some of those "import punks" were running 6 and 7 second quarters...

Making broad generalizations like that is smart to do... with the millions of fans NASCAR has it is very hard to put any value at all to your comments. Racing is racing in my book, I'd rather watch lawn mowers race than some of that other crap on TV today.

i love it on the freeway, when i am being nice and letting people in and get the thank you wave. i'm indignant when i don't.

Agreed.
On a related note I've noticed though that there are some drivers that don't regularly wave to the corner workers after a race. I try to do my best to ensure that each and every one of them see me wave my thanks as I think it is terribly important that they know i/we value their efforts. Do any of you encounter the same?

obviously you have never driven a NASCAR track at speed, those good ol' boys have a hell of a set, if you have ever been to a NASCAR race you would see that most of the fans go to watch 43 cars run within inches for 4 hours with the drama that unfolds, cannot say that much for F1 or many other racing series these days
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 94accordsedan »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">I hate it when people don't wave on the cooldown. They should get an auto DNF for that. Just wrong!!! </TD></TR></TABLE>
I can say, for myself atleast, I try my best to wave but after running wheel to wheel in a sprint race you really are cooling down and may be consumed with adrenaline, etc. and not think about it
other times you are thinking about what needs to be done to the car to pull that extra second out for qualifying or the race

BTCC/ETCC/V8 Supercars/SWC TC have the same feeling. No holds barred fender to fender don't give an inch. I've seen fist fights break out after the races between fans and even between drivers.

There are those who are gentlemen and then there are those others in our sport. NASCAR has its gentlemen and this is refreshing. Jeff is getting better each season-finally maturing I'd say. FOr those of you who have little regard for that series-keep this in mind Bruton Smith and the France family OWN the most important venues other than Indy. We get the opportunity to use some of these tracks for our kind of cars. The best examples are The Glen and Lowe's. Without NASCAR these tracks might not serve us. Tracks in private hands that are configured for both types of racing include Pocono and VIR (the latter is not used for NASCAR competition just testing).
How many can actually say they have driven a 3400 pound 800 HP Cup or Cup style car? I have and it is a blast. Our cars are much more nimble than those monsters. However, it does take talent and a very strong body to handle them for 4 hours in summer heat.
Just my 2 cents

IMO....Watching a car/driver navigate a road course is much more appealing then watching any number of cars fly around a circle track with there 800 hp monster engines at 9400 Rpm just inches away from each other.
But, I do see the point about the tracks. And, there has been alot of techinal advancements because of Nascar that Im sure we can see being utilized in our cars. Just don't care about circle track racing or swamp-buggy racing, for that matter.
Nascar is lame IMO

Anyone catch qualifying? Wonderboy Gordon is on pole...again. Not surprising, really, if you watched his lap. He and a very few others were all up on the curbs using every last inch of the paved part.
Boris ran a conservative lap because he has no provisional and still ended up 4th.
If the usual doesn't happen (bad pit stop, broken car) he'll be up front all day.
Fellows screwed up early in his lap and ended up somewhere in the 30s.

I'm of the opinion that Jeffy is very nearly the equal of any of the "specialists" on a road course. Frankly, Johnson doesn't suck either.

Time and time again, he shows how good he is (best in Cup imho). That guy can DRIVE.
