Think I might have blown my speaker
I have 2 Alpine 6x9 rear speakers and yesterday I noticed what sounded like something rattling like metal or something coming from one of the speakers. I turned the rear speakers off and were just using the fronts and subs. I did turn it all the way up a few days ago just for a second but that shouldn't have blown them I don't think and they seemed fine until yesterday. Would this be a blown speaker or would it be something else?
Remove the speaker and check it, make sure it's not something that has fallen into the speaker, make sure nothing is loose, [tweeter post/bridge] you can check for separated VC by holding speaker by the magnet with one hand, point speaker towards one of your ears, [2 or 3 inchs away] and with the other hand give the back of the magnet a solid hit with the side of your fist, keep your fist in contact with the magnet when you hit it, anything loose, [like the VC] will rattle when you do this, if it does not rattle it does not mean that the speaker is good, [the VC may still be damaged] if on the other hand it does rattle and it's not a loose tweeter, then it is a good bet it's the VC, if the speaker is still under warranty, take it back to where you got it and see if they will replace it

I will have to check it out. I noticed the wire where I soldered it in the electrical tape I had put on since I didn't have anymore heat shrink tubing had come off so would the wire hitting something do this? I wouldn't think it would but I don't know. I don't think it is under warrenty but it because I bet it only had a 1 year warrenty and they are probably 1 1/2 years old. I'm sorta liking just using the front speakers and subs though now but it doesn't go as loud and I kind of like having a rear fill back there so I don't know.
Not sure what wire you are talking about, but I agree it's probably not the problem, [more then likly it's the VC] Yea I would think it's no-where near as loud, you probably lost a lot of mid bass also, and yes Alpine has a 1 year parts and labour warranty on it's speakers.
I also run rear speakers and have on most of the systems I have had in my cars over the years, imaging and staging can be an issue when you have rear speakers, but I have found that unless you spend a ton-o-cash and time on a front speaker only system, it's hard to get the sound you want, most, [by far] of my customers agree, one thing that will help, [imaging and staging] is not using any tweeters in the rear, [that is why I have "cut" the tweets on my rear Eclipse 6.5" 2ways] in my LS.
This may be an opportunity for you to try it, if the problem is the tweeter or the tweeter post, remove them from both the 6x9s and just use the woofers, you will notice the image will be higher.

I do think they may have lost some bass I know with my subs turned off they don't really have much bass but I thought I had just gotten used to my subs so they didn't seem like they had a lot of bass compared to those but it may have lost some.
