Default Converting to Integra Brakes? Fit 13in wheels?

First post here... hopefully this is not too redundant, but I didn't find the info I needed in searching.

I drive an 89 ZC swapped CRX and I'm getting back into autocrossing after a few years hiatus. At the last event I went to I pretty much determined that my brakes are garbage. They are the stock Si Brakes and I don't think they have been touched in at least 4 years (except replacing a wheel cylinder in the drums).

Anyway, I was planning on fixing up my brakes and have heard that the 90-93 Integra brakes are a good swap. Right now I've got 15in GSR wheels, but I plan on eventually buying some 13in wheels for auto-x. Will the integra brakes fit under 13 wheels? Also is it worth it to convert the drums to discs or just leave it alone in the back?

If anyone has done this swap and has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it!

they should fit under 13's since the ex has the same size brakes as the teg and rolls on 13's. stay with drums there lighter, and in autocross you dont want dead weight. you can get 87 civic drums since there aluminum and then get some grippy shoes/pads......

not to jack your thread but Im curious why they wouldnt fit.
the 90 civic ex has a 10.3 inch rotors, which is the same size as the teg. and the civic rolls on 13". So why wouldn't they fit?

Actually lesser models came with 13" wheels, the 90-91 Civic EX 4dr came with 14" steelies/covers. They are the #4 & #10 combo here:

However, you are correct that some 13" wheels will cover the 10.3" brakes. Without going completely custom, there seem to be two:

1) the Lenso VPD 13x7.5" (I believe it only comes in a +25mm offset), H-T vendor Exospeed sells them. Here they are on a friend's DSP Integra GSR (same 10.3" brakes): http://www.sfrscca.org/solo2/p...9.jpg

2) the Panasport C8 3-piece Modulars, a fellow in the RR/AX forum used to run them in 13x8.5" on his DSP GSR. Not sure on backspace/offset, but search for user "Watkinsm3" if you go this route. This is actually semi-custom, Panasport seems to have stepped backspace sizes. See here for a pic: http://www.panasport.com/racing.gif

Not all 13's will fit. Even wheels of the same dimensions (width & offset) as above might not, if the spoke pattern or inner shell dimensions are different by a subtle amount.

BTW, what symptom(s) is occuring at the events? Is the car is just not slowing enough in time, maybe you just need to service/bleed/replace/etc. something. Locking up to soon/easily could just be overwhelming the tires (street or R-comps?) or trying to brake too much, too late.

With the right pad compound in a properly working stock Si sized brake system, you should be golden in any auto-x situation. The hardcore dedicated autocrosser is going to tell you to keep the stock size brakes, they're more than enough. Freshen the pads/lines/rotors and make sure the calipers/drums/MC/booster are in proper working order, then call it the day.

This way you keep your wheel options open to all 13's and both the unsprung & rotational mass down. If you're doing other things like road race/hpde/open track maybe you might need a little something more, but even then the ITA guys are getting away with stock calipers and rotors so that's food for thought...

Keep the drums in the rear for the lower weight reasons.

Search SCCAForums.com, there are a lot of STS-2 CRX's being built. You're probably running SM2 or DMod, but see what their pad of choice is right now.

Thanks for the info guys. That helps a lot.

This is my 2nd CRX though, and I've never been too impressed with the braking even when it had new pads/rotors. The integra conversion seemed pretty inexpensive and simple, and I figured it could only help and not hurt. Also, I was thinking that with the added horsepower of my ZC, the stock brakes might be a little weak. After all, didn't the Japanese SiR come with 10.3" brakes? And is the rotational mass issue really going to be noticeable when autocrossing?

I'm going to look into those Lenso wheels, but I'm undecided at this point whether to stay stock or go bigger... what to do what to do....

Good info...

I've found that stock brakes, Porterfield r4-s pads and stainless braided lines and a slightly larger '89 Accord LX-i master cylinder to be a near perfect autox setup. The Accord MC bolts right on to the stock CRX booster.

I've also found that a better brake fluid can really help. I used to use ATE SuperBlue Racing fluid in my autocrosser, but I found that Valvoline Heavy Duty brake fluid works just as well, doesn't boil or fade, and costs about 1/4 of the ATE...

If you do decide to go ahead with the Integra brake setup, you may find that getting wheels to fit is a trial and error process. My old '90 Integra LS, all stock, couldn't use my 14x5 '87 Si wheels (the little "button" wheels) because they hit the caliper. It rolled on 14" steelies just fine, though.

For my money, though, I'd stick with the stock brake setup and just freshen it all up a bit. Fresh rotors (if needed), Porterfield R-4S pads (I run their rear shoes, too, but probably wouldn't bother to do it next time), stainless brake lines, good M/C, and fresh HD fluid should have that car stopping on a dime.

And don't forget about tires being a crucial part of the braking system. Brakes stop the wheels, but TIRES stop the CAR!
