Default Head Unit: display, but no sound

I have a cheap Dual HU... it powers on, but there's no sound coming out of it and the display seems dim (I don't have any basis for comparison). I called Dual tech support, and the guy suggested that I run my ground to the battery. I just read the FAQ on here, and it suggested against that in most cases. The Dual tech guy said that it sounds like I'm not getting enough power and running the ground to the battery will take care of that. Does this sound right? And if so, where should I start looking in a 95 Honda Civic for a space to run the wire through?

dont wire anything to the battery. double check your wiring to the speakers, and make sure you wired the power right.

I also had that problem with my unit at one point (Pioneer). Then I decided to connect the blue remote wire to the power when you turn the key on and it worked, so you could also try that. If your unit has the remote "Blue" wire.
